Job overview

If successful you will be joining an enthusiastic and experienced stroke specialist multidisciplinary team as a Consultant in Stroke Medicine.

Our service admits approximately 800 patients with confirmed stroke each year. An out of hours thrombolysis service in provided in partnership with Nottingham University Hospitals (NUH).

A high risk TIA service runs 5 days a week with dedicated same day carotid Doppler and MRI imaging to provide carotid endarterectomy within 48 hours as needed. Weekend service is provided by NUH.

Inpatient services are based at King’s Mill Hospital, offering superb facilities for both stroke inpatients and outpatients services.

An integrated unit on Ward 53 and 54, is for hyper-acute, acute and rehabilitation stroke services. Four monitored beds comprise the hyper-acute bay and senior stroke nurses covering are all NIHSS certified and available 24/7 to admit patients directly from A&E as well as assessing potential thrombolysis patients. 25 beds on the stroke ward are for on-going acute management of our stroke patients and on-going rehabilitation, which includes a therapy treatment area.

There is a dedicated Integrated Community Stroke Service (ICSS) who provides intensive rehabilitation within the community. This is supported by physiotherapy, occupational therapy, speech and language therapy, clinical physiology and nurse and rehabilitation support workers. On average 40% of the patients admitted to the stroke unit are discharged to the ICSS.


Main duties of the job

Depending on the skills of the successful candidate an opportunity exists to take part in the acute medical on-call.

We are also able to offer an attractive recruitment package to include:

* Additional allocation of SPA time within the job plan for the first 2 years in order to allow time for service development (typically 7.5:2.5 split between DCC and SPA time)

Full and Specialist Registration and a license to practice with the GMC is essential. Those trained in the UK should have evidence of higher specialist training leading to CCT or be within 6 months of confirmed entry from date of interview or eligibility for specialist registration (CESR). The ability to work effectively as part of a multi-disciplinary team is also essential.

Person specification


Qualifications

* Full and Specialist registration (and with a licence to practise) with the General Medical Council (GMC) or be eligible for specialist registration within six months of interview. Note: CESR applicants must be on the Specialist Register at the point of application
* Membership of Royal College of Physicians or show evidence of equivalent qualification


Experience

* Experience requisite to meeting all aspects of the job plan
* Understanding of all aspects of Stroke Medicine
* Ability to maintain clinical credibility and authority with a multi-professional team including senior trainees
* Five years supervised training in an appropriate SpR equivalent training programme
* Stroke Fellowship


Teaching

* Demonstrable ability as a teacher with evidence of training for the role


Research

* Ability to convert research evidence into clinical practice
* Publications in peer-reviewed journals
* Ability to effectively organise and manage clinical workload
* The potential to develop management and leadership skills


Other

* Ability to communicate effectively with team members, patients, relatives, GPs, nurses and other agencies
* Commitment to Continuing Medical Education and the requirements of Clinical Governance and Audit
* Willingness to undertake additional professional responsibilities at local, regional or national levels
