The Chemical Biology Services Team at the European Bioinformatics Institute (EMBL-EBI) is seeking a talented Scientist with expertise in data curation to oversee the quality of bioactivity and drug discovery data in the ChEMBL database.
ChEMBL is a leading chemogenomics resource that provides open bioactivity data and tools to the scientific community, supporting drug discovery in both academia and industry. The successful candidate will work collaboratively within a team of scientists, bioinformatics experts, and software engineers across EMBL-EBI and with external partners globally.
Responsibilities
* Curate biological data within the ChEMBL database, ensuring high-quality standards.
* Collaborate with team members to map bioactivity data from literature to biological entities using bioinformatics resources and ontologies.
* Identify and validate therapeutic targets for drug molecules in clinical development from various sources.
* Assist data depositors in formatting and curating their data for deposition into ChEMBL.
* Verify and annotate data manually against original sources like scientific literature and pharma pipelines.
* Develop semi-automated processes to identify and correct data errors.
* Participate in training and support external users.
* Contribute to scientific publications based on project outcomes.
Requirements
* PhD or equivalent in biological or biomedical sciences.
* Excellent attention to detail, communication skills, and ability to collaborate effectively.
* Strong knowledge of pharmacology, biological targets, and mechanisms of drug action.
* Familiarity with experimental techniques in in vitro and in vivo assays.
* Ability to work accurately under deadlines, independently and in teams.
Desirable Skills
* Experience in biological data curation and bioinformatics databases.
* Knowledge of biological ontologies and file formats like FASTA, XML, OBO.
* Experience with SQL and drug discovery environments.

* Competitive salary starting at £3,064 - £3,303 per month after tax, plus benefits.
