We are delighted to invite applications for a Consultant in Restorative Dentistry to join our dynamic and forward-thinking team at Somerset Foundation Trust. This newly established post reflects our commitment to expanding specialist dental services across Somerset, ensuring high-quality, patient-centred care in restorative dentistry.
The successful candidate will play a pivotal role in delivering consultant-led outpatient and inpatient services, with a focus on complex restorative care including prosthodontics, periodontics, and endodontics. You will work closely with colleagues across specialties-particularly Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery and Orthodontics-to provide integrated multidisciplinary treatment planning and care.

You'll be instrumental in developing clinical pathways, mentoring junior staff, and contributing to service innovation. The role also offers scope for academic collaboration, teaching, and research, supported by strong links with regional dental schools.

Main duties, tasks & skills required
The successful candidate will provide a Restorative Dentistry service, with scope to develop their own area of interest. Main duties are conducted at Musgrove Park Hospital with some clinics held at locations in Exeter.
The consultant will be expected to work within a multi-disciplinary team including a flexible job plan which can be altered by agreement to meet the needs of the service.
The consultant will need to demonstrate:
* Understanding of clinical risk management
* Competent to work without direct supervision where appropriate.
* Clear, logical thinking showing an analytical / scientific approach.
* Ability to mentor staff both medical and nursing.
* Experience of clinical risk management.
The consultant will also assume responsibility for the organisation, management and diagnosis of treatment of patients in the hospital, in conjunction with colleagues across the hospital
There is no emergency cover or on-call associated with this role

Qualifications
Essential
Registered dental practitioner, with full registration with the GDC, or within 6 months of being included on the register at the time of interview
Clinical Fellowship in Restorative Dentistry or equivalent
Holds CCST in Restorative Dentistry or equivalent or will obtain within 6 months of interview
Desirable
Distinctions, scholarships prizes, other degrees e.g. BSc MSc, MS, PhD
Experience
Essential
Postgraduate experience
Successful completion of an SAC approved 5-year minimum training programme in Restorative Dentistry, or within 6 months of completion or equivalent
Evidence of participation in clinical audit and understanding of role of audit in improving medical/dental practice
Understanding of clinical risk management and clinical governance
An understanding of general principles, scientific method and interpretation of literature
Ability to critically appraise the literature
Desirable
Presentation and/or publication of audit projects
Evidence of personal research and presentations
Publications in peer reviewed journals
Additional Criteria
Essential
Commitment to teaching of Dentists, junior staff and allied health professionals
Evidence of active participate in teaching
Desirable
Organisation of (undergraduate and/or postgraduate) teaching programmes
