Job Description
This role is an exciting opportunity for an experienced electrical engineer with knowledge of high, medium, low and extra‑low voltage electrical systems and equipment to join the Environment Agency’s Standards and Engineering team as a Senior Electrical Engineer. Expertise relating to control systems design and SCADA / telemetry systems would be beneficial.
Responsibilities
Working within our Standards, Asset Management and Engineering Directorate you will influence and shape how we deliver our service into the future. As part of our Technical Authority, you will provide technical engineering leadership and support to the whole organisation to meet our objectives of safe, reliable and sustainable assets and meet our commitments to net zero carbon.
You will be part of a team that manages, develops and maintains our electrical engineering standards, including our electrical safety rules, for our electrical systems and equipment, which includes HV and LV power systems and control systems within assets such as pumping stations, water management and flood defence structures and monitoring sites.
You will help develop, deliver and maintain competence and skills guidance for all employees managing or carrying out work on our electrical systems and equipment.
Additionally you will hold a national incident response role which may be within normal working hours or out of hours.
Experience / Skills Required
* A good working knowledge of the Electricity at Work regulations and BS 7671 IET wiring regulations.
* A good working knowledge of control systems, including the application of IEC 61508, IEC 62061 and BS EN 13489, and telemetry / SCADA systems.
* Knowledge of high and low voltage generation and distribution systems.
* Knowledge and experience in the development and delivery of Safe systems of work, risk assessments, method statements.
* Testing and isolation of high and low voltage electrical systems and proving dead.
* Strong understanding of a risk‑based approach to electrical maintenance philosophies and implementation, including the application of Failure Mode Effects Analysis, reliability systems and processes.
* Drafting and publishing of electrical policy, instructions and guidance.
* Excellent work management, team working and communication skills are a must for this role.

This is a hybrid role, and we will allocate a base location near to your home. We use smart tools to stay connected and reduce travel; some travel and overnights may be required. You’ll have an incident management objective in your development plan. Appropriate training will be given.

Role specific license requirements: UK Driving licence.
Role specific professional membership requirements: Must have current membership of a recognised engineering institution and be registered as a Chartered Engineer with the UK Engineering Council, or provide evidence of working toward registration with a realistic prospect of registration within 12 months.
