The Clinical Engineering Department at DCH supports the clinical use of medical devices in the Trust, from simple devices to the most complex life supporting equipment in the critical care setting (e.g. Theatres, Emergency Department, and Critical Care/High Dependency Units.
This post supports the Clinical Engineering by carrying out basic function testing on medical devices to help ensure they are fit for clinical use.
Main duties of the job
The post holder will support the day-to-day operations of an efficient, effective, and comprehensive Clinical Engineering Department at Dorset County Hospital NHS Foundation Trust. The post is primarily to support the equipment management processes within the department by performing basic technical inspections including function testing and electrical safety tests on a wide range of medical devices throughout Dorset County Hospital Foundation Trust and other external customers of the Clinical Engineering Department. This work will be carried out under the guidance of the Senior Clinical Engineers.
The postholder will also undertake work in the Equipment Library in support of the Equipment Library Technicians.
The post holder will also carry out, under the direction of a Senior Clinical Engineer:
* Ordering parts and accessories for medical devices and equipment
* Monitoring and rotating stock levels to ensure minimal wastage

Education and Training
Essential criteria
* Good level of general education to GCSE standard or equivalent.
* Engineering qualification, or a HNC in a relevant subject matter or equivalent.
Desirable criteria
* European Computer Driving Licence (ECDL) or equally demonstrable equivalence.
Knowledge and Experience
Essential criteria
* Experience in the function testing of medical devices, such as; Infusion/syringe pumps, Diathermy machines, Defibrillators, Patient monitoring.
* Practical experience of using a range of test & measuring equipment and of applying electronic / mechanical engineering workshop practices and techniques
* Knowledge of basic engineering theory necessary to efficiently diagnose faults on medical devices.
Skills and Abilities
Essential criteria
* Ability to operate equipment worked on, in all modes of operation, in order to safely verify correct operation and aid fault diagnosis
* Electronic engineering skills including the use of test & measuring equipment, handling and assembly of components and boards, fault finding and diagnosis, use of technical manuals and circuit diagrams.
* Mechanical engineering skills including use of test and measuring equipment, assembly and bonding of components, use of technical manuals and drawings.
* Basic IT skills – with MS Office and ability to maintain, interrogate and use the features of a complex database, i.e. F2.
* Good organisational, prioritisation and time management skills – to manage work areas and workload.
* Willingness to continuously develop skills and abilities and to attend in house and external training courses, at base and throughout the UK.
* Flexibility and ability to adapt to continuously improving systems of working.
* Good written and verbal communication skills.
* Good interpersonal skills. Able to discuss with nursing, clinical, scientific, and management staff on issues relating to the use of specific medical devices.
* A full U.K. driving licence and own transport is essential for this post as part of the duties include travel for servicing and repair.
