Porvair Sciences Limited (PSL) are global leaders in the design, development & manufacture of porous plastics technologies under our Vyon brand. Vyon is a market leading material used for a wide range of filtration and separation applications within the biotechnology, pharmaceutical, laboratory and life science industries.
Our Research and Development team are recruiting an early career Materials Development Engineer to create new, and refine existing, products and technologies. The successful candidate will research, design, test and implement the development of new Vyon products, balancing materials characteristics to achieve both customer and production requirements.
The work involved will require an analytical mind, excellent attention to detail and thorough experimental planning. The right candidate will be given the support and training necessary to progress the development of our sintered porous plastic product range, improving our capabilities as an international leader in the development and supply of high performance, innovative materials and solutions for applications in filtration and separation.
The individual must be self-motivated and be able to plan and carry out their work reliably and in a timely manner. In addition, they would need to have good communication and reporting skills and an enthusiastic approach to their work.
Main Duties and Responsibilities:
Working closely with the R&D Manager and the technical teams the role will involve: Designing new or improved materials and finished products through collaboration with cross-functional teams.
Utilising data analytics and metrics to measure the performance of products and identify functional and aesthetic improvements.
Providing support for projects and investigations, undertaking a range of technical tasks including:
* Powder analysis using laser scattering and density testing.
* Vyon material characterisation using scanning electron microscopy, porometry, mercury intrusion porosimetry, fluid permeability and hydrophilicity testing.
* G eneral maintenance and calibration of laboratory equipment.
* Sample analysis and comparative testing of competitor products.
* CAD for concept evaluation and functional prototyping
Writing standard testing protocols, safe operating procedures, application notes and other documents to support new product development
NPD Project Management including regular presenting and reporting on progress to the wider R&D and Business teams
Development of product and process specifications
Providing necessary support for the technical, manufacturing and sales teams
Essential Skills and Qualifications
Degree in Materials Science or Engineering. Biomaterials or Bioengineering would be considered.
Computer literacy (familiarity with Microsoft Office as a minimum).
Desirable Skills and Qualifications
Experience or educational background in Polymer Science.
Knowledge or experience of sintering.
Experience with 3D modelling software.
Experience Required:
Strong background in Science and Engineering with strong academic qualifications in these fields.
Demonstrable experience in problem solving and technical communication.
Familiarity with materials analysis techniques such as SEM/EDS, universal testing machines and particle size analysis.
Industrial experience in a new product development role would be an advantage but new graduates are encouraged to apply.
Experience of working in a laboratory setting with knowledge of laboratory disciplines.
Experience bringing design ideas from concept to prototype.
A proven track record in NPD.
