Overview
As part of our prison support team, your work will be varied and help to keep the prison moving. This is an active role with a range of physical tasks, including lifting and carrying, long periods of standing and walking, and periods of lone working on both day and night shifts.
Responsibilities
* ensuring the secure entry and exit of staff, visitors and vehicles
* carrying out searches of staff, prisoners, visitors and vehicles
* walking around the prison site to escort vehicles and contractors
* issuing and collecting staff keys and radios
* walking around the prison site, patrolling and searching perimeter fence areas
* operating the prison radio system and monitoring CCTV, reporting any suspicious activity
* welcoming visitors on arrival and escorting them if needed
* monitoring and logging mail coming into the prison and reporting any contraband items
* cell and prisoner safety duties, including ensuring cell doors are locked and prisoners are accounted for
* photographing prisoners and processing prisoners' property and parcels
* supervising prisoners where required and assisting prison officers with escorting prisoners
* walking around delivering and collecting food trolleys (or using an electric tug vehicle)
* collecting mail from the local sorting office and handling associated lifting where required
* monitoring the prison's PIN phone system and maintaining related records
* completing relevant records and adhering to procedures and incident response protocols
Working patterns and location
You will work an average of 37 hours per week, including night shifts, evenings, weekends and bank/public holidays on a rolling pattern. The frequency of night shifts varies by establishment and can be discussed at interview. The MoJ offers Hybrid Working arrangements where business need allows; this is informal and non-contractual and depends on location and role. Some roles may not be suitable for Hybrid Working, and arrangements are discussed and agreed with the successful candidate and reviewed regularly. Nationally advertised roles may involve appointment to a MoJ office location.
Other terms
Standard full-time hours are 37 per week, excluding unpaid breaks. MoJ terms and conditions are subject to Civil Service reform, and transfer rules may apply for staff moving from other civil service employers. Tattoos are permitted if non-offensive; facial tattoos are generally not acceptable except for cultural, religious or medical reasons. Qualifications
You do not need any formal qualifications to do this job. You should have good judgement, common sense, responsibility and teamwork, and be able to communicate confidently in English (or Welsh where specified).
Salary and benefits (illustrative)
National salary: £29,432 for a 37-hour week, with 20% unsocial hours allowance included. Benefits may include annual leave of 25 days rising to 30 with service, 9 bank/public/privilege holidays, access to a Level 2 apprenticeship, Civil Service pension, season ticket loans, retail discounts, Employee Assistance Programme and Cycle to Work scheme.
