Overview

GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) is a science-led global healthcare company with a special purpose: to help people do more, feel better, live longer. We are on an audacious journey to impact the health of 2.5 billion people over the next decade. Our R&D division focuses on pioneering vaccines and medicines, integrating cutting-edge science and technology, and harnessing genetics and new data to advance medical research. We foster a collaborative environment that unites talent to pre-empt and defeat diseases. Join us in uniting science, technology, and talent to get ahead of disease together.

At GSK, we aim to supercharge our data capability to better understand patients and accelerate discovery of vaccines and medicines. The Onyx Research Data Platform represents a major investment by GSK R&D and Digital & Tech, designed to deliver a step-change in leveraging data, knowledge, and prediction to find new medicines. We are a full-stack team including product and portfolio leadership, data engineering, infrastructure and DevOps, data/metadata/knowledge platforms, and AI/ML and analysis platforms, all geared toward:

* Building a next-generation, metadata- and automation-driven data experience for GSK’s scientists, engineers, and decision-makers, increasing productivity and reducing time spent on “datamechanics”.
* Providing best-in-class AI/ML and data analysis environments to accelerate predictive capabilities and attract top-tier talent.
* Aggressively engineering data at scale as one unified asset to unlock value from the data and predictions in real-time.
* Automation of end-to-end data flows: faster and reliable ingestion of high-throughput data in genetics, genomics and multi-omics, to extract value from investments in new technology (instrument to analysis-ready data in ~12h). Enabling governance by design of external and internal data with engineered practical solutions for controlled use and monitoring.
* Innovative disease-specific and domain-expert data products to enable computational scientists and collaborators to reach key insights faster, accelerating biopharmaceutical development cycles. Improving engineering efficiency: extensible, reusable, scalable, updateable.

Position Summary

GSK is looking for an experienced DataOps Engineer to join the growing DataOps team. DataOps Engineers take ownership of delivering high-performing, high-impact biomedical and scientific data ops products and services, from a customer pattern to be used by Data Engineers through to final delivery (and ongoing monitoring and operations) of a templated project and all associated automation. They are standard-bearers for software engineering and quality coding practices, and may mentor junior engineers or coordinate the work of others on large projects. They devise useful metrics to ensure services meet customer demand and iterate to improve those metrics in an agile fashion.

Responsibilities and Qualifications

As a DataOps Engineer, this person will be a highly technical individual contributor, building modern, cloud-native, DevOps-first systems to standardise and templatised biomedical and scientific data engineering, with experience across the following areas:

* Deliver declarative components for common data ingestion, transformation and publishing techniques
* Define and implement data governance aligned to modern standards
* Establish scalable, automated processes for data engineering teams across GSK
* Be a thought leader and partner with wider Onyx data engineering teams to advise on implementation and best practices
* Define Service and Flow orchestration
* Data as a configurable resource (including configuration-driven access to scientific data modelling tools)
* Observability (monitoring, alerting, logging, tracing, etc.)
* Enable quality engineering through KPIs and code coverage and quality checks
* Audit as a service
