Company Overview We are a leading chemical distribution company based in the UK, supplying a wide range of industrial and specialty chemicals to businesses across various sectors. Committed to compliance, safety, and customer service, we are looking for a diligent and detail-oriented Customs and Excise Assistant to support our Customs & Excise team in ensuring adherence to all relevant import/export regulations and HMRC requirements. Role Overview The Customs and Excise Assistant will play a key role in supporting the day-to-day operations of the Customs & Excise function. This includes assisting with the review of submitted of customs declarations, document collection to maintaining accurate commercial records, ensuring compliance with excise duties and import/export regulations, and supporting audits and inspections and general queries from the business relating to customs and excise. Their role is to provide operational support under the guidance of the Specialist. Key Responsibilities Assist in reviewing submitted import/export declarations in compliance with HMRC regulations. Maintain accurate records of customs documentation, tariffs, and duty payments. Support with the management and retention of excise duty documentation, including denatured alcohol usage and bonded warehouse procedures (if applicable). Liaise with freight forwarders, customs brokers, and internal departments to ensure timely clearance of goods. Manage the collection of Long-Term Supplier Declarations (LTSDs) from suppliers to support origin claims. Issue LTSDs to customers in line with agreed trade agreements and regulations. Maintain a central database of origin records for products, ensuring that the business has a clear audit trail for origin declarations. Support the Specialist in ensuring the business is declaring origin accurately on all relevant customs documentation. Monitor changes in customs and excise legislation and support compliance updates. Prepare documentation for internal and external audits. Help investigate and resolve customs queries and discrepancies. Contribute to process improvement initiatives to enhance customs and excise operations. Support the Customs and Excise Team in day-to-day activities and ad-hoc projects. Support in departmental or cross-functional projects Key Skills and Qualifications Previous experience in a custom, logistics, supply chain, or regulatory role is preferred. Knowledge of UK import/export regulations and HMRC customs processes is desirable. Familiarity with excise duty regulations and bonded warehouse operations is a plus. Excellent attention to detail and excellent record-keeping skills. Good communication and interpersonal skills. Proficiency in Microsoft Office (especially Excel); experience with customs software (e.g. CDS, CHIEF, or similar) is advantageous. Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
