Job overview
Bedfordshire Hospitals are appointing a Specialist Breast Surgeon to join 3 Oncoplastic Breast Surgeons, one Breast/Endocrine Surgeon and one Associate Specialist at the Luton site. We are a friendly, supportive unit with a forward thinking approach and a history of development in line with national guidance and the needs of our community.
Excellent facilities include laminar flow theatres, wireless localisation and in-theatre specimen X-rays. We are trialling ‘Clear Coast’ margin assessment. Our progressive radiology team support ultrasound training of surgeons. We provide faculty on the UEA ultrasound-training course, and run training days for international and UK trainees. We provide mainstream genetic testing, run specialty-specific CGMs and are establishing a community mastalgia clinic. We provide implant reconstruction and LD flaps at Luton, with free flaps at Bedford. We have an excellent partnership with our plastics team who advise on cases through an Oncoplastic MDT and support us with joint clinics and lists. We do a large number of therapeutic mammoplasties with reductions facilitating symmetrisation in one operation as per GIRFT. We support each other with challenging cases and perform LICAPS, lipomodelling and nipple reconstructions.
The chemotherapy unit is on site and we have experienced oncologists working between Bedford and Mount Vernon Hospitals. We actively participate in research and are involved in national trials.
Main duties of the job
As a Specialist doctor in Breast Surgery, you would be an independent practitioner in one stop clinics and theatre, although support and training would be provided for more complex oncoplastic procedures as needed. There would be support available from experienced breast care nurses in the joint results clinics, where you would be able to give results to patients and plan necessary treatment. You would attend regular theatre lists for joint operating, as well as having access to your own operating list. You would attend multidisciplinary team meeting and present patients as needed
You would be able to attend Plastics lists at Bedford to develop your oncoplastic skills. If you wished to develop breast ultrasound skills then training is available.
You would be expected to have excellent communication skills and be able to work in a multidisciplinary team
