Overview
We are seeking an experienced full-time Medical Director & Consultant Psychiatrist who will provide leadership at Cygnet Hospital Nield House, a 29-bed mental health hospital for women in Crewe. The post holder will also provide senior medical cover to inpatients on Clarion Ward (a 14-bed complex personality disorder service for women). The post holder will be the Responsible Clinician and will oversee the care of ward inpatients as required, with responsibility for auditing medical services and ensuring quality in accordance with GMC standards and other professional guidelines. The role combines clinical expertise with strategic leadership to oversee delivery of high-quality care, supported by a Specialty Doctor and a multidisciplinary team.
The service is split into two wards: Clarion Ward (14 beds, complex personality disorder) and Compton Ward (15 beds, acute service). The ethos is to assess and treat in the least restrictive environment with robust discharge planning, focusing on stabilisation and rehabilitation for independent life in the community. The team collaborates with service users, families and referrers to provide a seamless pathway from referral to discharge. The approach is recovery-focused with a multidisciplinary team to support shorter lengths of stay. The Medical Director will have overall medical responsibility for patient treatment plans and will liaise with the multidisciplinary team, reporting to the Regional Medical Director and Hospital Manager as appropriate.

Main duties and responsibilities
As a Medical Director you will:
* Ensure optimal clinical outcomes for the people in our care
* Lead on all aspects of clinical practice and serve as an example of operational excellence
* Provide leadership for medical staff on professional and managerial issues while monitoring performance
* Supervise all consultants and ensure consultants supervise specialist doctors and allied staff
* Provide expert knowledge and support within the service and to the wider team
* Ensure quality and compliance with internal and external standards and regulations
* Work with colleagues to provide integrated, whole-person treatment and care
* Coach, mentor and train colleagues
* Ensure regular communication and meetings with medical staff
* Assist in recruitment and retention of medical staff to provide a high-quality clinical service
* Ensure medical staff involvement in hospital clinical governance
* Lead on implementation of CQC outcomes in collaboration with hospital managers
* Chair medical advisory committee meetings and attend Medical Directors meetings
* Liaise with Responsible Officer and Regional Medical Director regarding fitness to practise concerns
As a Consultant Psychiatrist you will:
* Lead on the provision of high-quality care to service users admitted to Clarion Ward
* Act as a positive role model toward patients, their families, visitors and staff
* Take responsibility for patient treatment plans in conjunction with the MDT
* Assess referrals and undertake mental state examinations
* Undertake investigations, diagnosis and treatment as appropriate
* Conduct ward rounds, patient reviews and clinical audits
* Lead risk assessment, risk management and embed clinical governance
* Supervise reports for Mental Health Act tribunals and managers hearings, and attend hearings
* Liaise with Ministry of Justice for transfer of patients and approval of leave as required
* Maintain good patient records
