Join to apply for the Power Systems Engineer role at GE Vernova
Job Description Summary
The North and South Europe Grid System Integration (GSI) team delivers a wide range of high voltage transmission projects, including the connection of new generation and grid stability projects. We are looking for a Power Systems Studies Engineer to join the team.
In This Role
You will lead concept studies at the tender stage, working with other engineering disciplines to develop solutions that satisfy the client’s needs and conform to requirements such as Grid Code connection agreements. Once the project is secured, you will manage external resources that will undertake the full set of electrical system studies, validate the output, and act as the main technical interface to the client in this area of the design.
Grid Solutions, a GE Renewable Energy business, serves customers globally with over 13,000 employees, providing power utilities and industries worldwide with equipment, systems and services to bring power reliably and efficiently from the point of generation to end power consumers. Grid Solutions focuses on addressing the challenges of the energy transition by enabling the safe and reliable connection of renewable and distributed energy resources to the grid.
These Projects Typically Include
* New high voltage transmission substations
* Expansion and reinforcement of existing transmission substations and networks
* Onshore and offshore substations to facilitate windfarm connections and other renewable technologies
* Network compensation and stability projects
* Energy storage projects
Role
At the tender stage, you will play a key role supporting the Engineering team to develop the concept solutions needed to demonstrate competence to the customer and secure the project. This generally includes undertaking the following tasks:
* Understanding the customer’s power system requirements, regulatory constraints and standards that need to be adhered to.
* Developing the initial system architecture and advising the customer on areas of difficulty or where designs can be optimised.
* Undertaking provisional load‑flow studies, with PowerFactory DIgSILENT or similar software tools, for the purpose of initial system design and equipment sizing.
* Undertaking provisional RAM studies (Reliability, Availability and Maintainability) to ensure the proposed solution meets the client’s expectations.
* Working closely with the mechanical‑electrical teams to ensure that the practical realisation of the power system design is efficient and cost effective.
* Managing any third‑party resources, engaging them to undertake more detailed studies such as harmonic analysis, and validating the work produced.
* Engaging with the customer, as required, to articulate the power system solution and answer questions or queries that may be raised.
You will continue to support the project as it moves into the delivery stage and work closely with the execution teams to manage the full suite of electrical studies needed to confirm grid code compliance. This generally includes undertaking the following tasks:
* Identifying the studies to be performed, preparing procurement specifications, and working closely with the sourcing team to engage the entity that will perform the full set of project studies.
* Once a suitable consultant has been engaged, setting them to work, answering queries, monitoring progress and validating the work that they produce.
* Continuing to be the main point of contact to the customer for all topics related to power system studies and answering questions or queries that may be raised.
* Managing the customer approval process and ensuring that the customer’s comments are answered in a comprehensive and timely manner.
* Continuing to work closely with the mechanical‑electrical teams and ensuring complete alignment between the power system design and the practical realisation of the project.
Requirements
* An MSc (or equivalent) in Power Systems Engineering.
* Demonstrable experience (over 7 years) working in a role where you undertake electrical study work on high voltage transmission systems, with a strong working knowledge of the following topics:
* Electrical load flow and equipment sizing
* Reactive power management
* Short circuit calculations
* Harmonic management
* Availability studies
* Insulation coordination
* Proficiency in power system analysis tools (e.g., PSS®E, PowerFactory DIgSILENT, PSCAD)
* Competent user of a RAM studies software application such as ReliaSoft – BlockSIM (or equivalent)
* Excellent communication and report‑writing skills
Desired Characteristics
The ideal candidate will possess a deep understanding of the power transmission business and the operational dynamics of electrical power grids, ensuring stable and efficient power delivery. You will have a working knowledge of related standards and documents, such as the UK Grid Code, IEC and IEEE, in order to understand the design constraints that need to be adhered to.
You will be confident to discuss these complex topics with customers and consultants and be able to propose solutions or improvements needed to create successful concepts that can then be delivered. You will also be able to bridge the gap between the theoretical system studies and practical design realisation and be able to provide guidance to the electrical‑mechanical teams that will create the detail design.
You will be a team player, with strong communication and interpersonal skills, capable of self‑management, and have a high degree of flexibility to manage priorities. Resilience and a proactive, self‑learning attitude will be essential to thrive in a fast‑paced, multi‑project environment.
