Ward Manager

We have a rare opportunity which has arisen within our regional medium secure Hospital for an experienced nurse to join our multi-disciplinary team.

We are looking for a B7 ward manager to lead our busy Assessment ward and ICU which are at the front end of our service, supporting our most vulnerable patients. The role is varied, challenging and fast paced. The successful candidate will have extensive experience working in mental health, they will be resilient, reliable and they will be a compassionate leader.

Interviews for this vacancy will be held on the 28th November 2025.

Please note applicants will be required to pay for their DBS check. Costs are deducted from salary following appointment. The cost of the DBS application is £26.40 (standard) or £54.40 (enhanced), this cost will be deducted from your salary over the first 2 months of employment.

You are encouraged to enrol for the DBS Update Service. An annual fee of £16 per year applies.


Main duties of the job

As a Ward Manager, you will:

* Have 24-hour managerial responsibility for the ward (24 hour responsibility for the Hospital when on-call)
* Provide a visible and accessible leadership presence in ward settings to patients, carers and staff
* Provide effective direct management to the direct care staff on the ward
* Ensure that excellent standards of care are maintained on the ward at all times
* You will be required to complete mandatory training to assist your professional development.

Job responsibilities

* Manage the budget for the ward and extended team on a day to day basis
* Ensure that all members of staff receive appropriate supervision and performance review
* Ensure that excellent clinical standards are maintained at all times
* Provide strong clinical leadership both at a ward and hospital level
* To monitor standards of clinical care, the physical ward environment and standards of hotel services delivered to patients
* To act as investigating officer with regard to any complaints/incidents as required
* Where instances of service deficit are identified to evaluate service, make recommendations and initiate change processes to ensure service improvement
* To improve on the quality of patient care experience by using Releasing Time To Care initiatives
* To oversee audits within the hospital as appropriate
* Ensure correct implementation of the Mental Health Act within the ward
* Develop and sustain effective relationships with outside agencies and stakeholders
* To represent the hospital at directorate and Trust wide forums as required
* To ensure maximum efficiency in the use of the ward and extended role resources


Person Specification


Physical requirements

* Able to perform the full range of duties
* Able to undertake training in the management of violence reduction
* Able to occasionally escort and maintain custody of patients both within and outside the secure area if required
* Able to respond to serious emergency incidents


Qualifications

* Degree level or evidence of equivalent experience
* Post registration leadership and/or management qualification


Training

* Mental Health Act
* Appropriate management training


Experience

* Adult mental health
* Clinical supervision and staff appraisal via PAD
* Experienced in involving service users and carers in service planning and monitoring
* Significant experience of working at a senior nursing level at Band 6 or above
* Experienced leader and manager
* Leading and managing services in a forensic setting
* Work experience within secure environments in the care and treatment of MDOs
* Experience in managing change and introducing new ways of working
* Experience of service development
* Experience of providing clinical/managerial supervision and facilitating reflective practice
* Previous experience with an offending population group


Knowledge

* Knowledge of how to ensure least restrictive practices, a recovery focussed approach and increase patient involvement
* Comprehensive understanding of relevant legislation and national drivers affecting clinical services and nursing practice
* Knowledge and understanding to lead service developments and quality improvements
* Understanding of different challenges and requirements for leading and managing within a medium secure setting


Skills

* Ability to prioritise and manage workload effectively
* Able to positively engage with patients and nursing staff
* Ability to work cohesively with other disciplines
* Evidence of effective leadership and communication skills
* Enhanced skills in providing mentorship, coaching and supervision


Contractual requirements

* Ability to provide out of hours on call attendance
* Flexible working to ensure service needs are met
* Ability to change hours of working at short notice and be responsive to the needs of the service
