This is an exciting opportunity to join the Environment Agency’s Natural Capital Ecosystem Assessment (NCEA) Programme as the lead for the Data Analysis & Statistics Work Package within the Data, Analysis & Digital Workstream. The NCEA programme gathers comprehensive data on ecosystems such as freshwater, estuarine, and coastal waters to assess their benefits for people and the economy, highlighting the value of nature for informed decision-making.
You will lead a team of data scientists and statisticians responsible for designing and evaluating monitoring networks and analyzing data to produce robust evidence on ecosystem conditions. Your role involves coordinating team efforts, supporting technical delivery, and ensuring the work package meets its objectives within the broader programme.
Your responsibilities include:
1. Setting the overall data analysis and statistical approach for the programme;
2. Developing and managing the workplan for the work package;
3. Supporting the team in developing analytical approaches, resolving technical issues, managing risks, and maintaining scientific standards;
4. Collaborating with other work package leads to address cross-cutting issues;
5. Engaging with stakeholders across the programme on data and statistical matters;
6. Line management of the team.
The post is based within the Strategic Evidence Design & Assessment (SEDA) team, part of the Chief Scientist’s Group in the Environment & Business Directorate. We are a friendly, dispersed team of data and evidence specialists dedicated to supporting water environment initiatives.
Experience and skills required:
* Proficiency in R/R Studio for data visualization and statistical analysis;
* Experience in designing monitoring networks and analyzing data with mixed models;
* Experience managing technical contractors;
* Strong team ethic and ability to manage workloads and risks;
* Excellent communication skills to motivate and organize teams;
* Good organizational skills with the ability to prioritize under pressure;
* Proactive problem-solving and decision-making skills;
* Experience working with diverse stakeholders;
* Line management experience (desirable).
Development opportunities and training will be provided. The role offers flexibility regarding location, with some travel required.
