The Matron will have continuous overall responsibility for the operational and strategic management of the Antenatal and Postnatal wards. They will work in partnership with the Lead Midwife, Deputy Chief Midwife, Chief Midwife, General Manager, wider senior team and multidisciplinary team to ensure a cohesive and collaborative approach to ensuring a high quality service at all times.
The Matron will support all staff and develop supportive structures ensuring that there is an appropriate learning environment and evaluation of care. The development of team working across all areas of responsibility will be essential.

Main duties of the job
Manage and lead Antenatal and Postnatal inpatient teams at St Thomas Hospital site
Act as an effective and positive role model, providing expert clinical advice and support for all staff,
Ensure that families experiences is of the highest quality
Demonstrating clinical leadership and expertise in providing care to families within the Community & Antenatal clinic.
Identify and facilitate strategies for service improvement and potential development initiatives.
Implement and follow HR policies to manage sickness, absence and disciplinary matters.
Facilitate effective communication with clients and all staff within the multi-disciplinary team.
Manage and assist in resolving conflict situations and investigate and respond to complaints.
Participate actively in the management of all maternity services.
Participate and lead in quality improvement programmes .
Work collaboratively with the multidisciplinary team to advance the maternity strategy.
Participate in the on call maternity rota.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
1. Leadership and operational management of the specific clinical areas.
2. Communication with a variety of stakeholders in the service, including service users, vaccination and screening teams, along with primary care and service managers of community estates
3. Service improvement in the areas within the portfolio to work in line with the maternity strategy and Good to Outstanding Programme
4. Be responsible for the safety and quality of care provided in the clinical areas
5. Support, educate and develop the teams within the service

Education/ Qualifications
Essential criteria
6. Registered Midwife
7. Degree in midwifery or equivalent Evidence of relevant clinical updating
Desirable criteria
8. Masters Degree (health of leadership related)
9. Leadership qualification
Previous experience
Essential criteria
10. Post registration experience in all areas of midwifery practice including community.
11. Broad clinical experience relevant to the post.
12. A proven track record of operational service management at a senior level in community and an acute hospital environment, including staff management, financial management and change management.
Desirable criteria

17. Proven ability to analyse complex problems and to develop and successfully implement practical and workable solutions to address them.

19. A strong sense of personal and team accountability coupled with a clear understanding of the boundaries around delegated authority
