We are looking for an enthusiastic and motivated Junior Sister to join the team for Robert Tiffany Ward.

The ward consists of 13 rooms, and 2-day case surgical areas. We offer specialist facilities to provide excellent ongoing care of patients throughout their cancer journey. Full-time and Part-time working patterns will be considered.

The ideal candidate will have experience as a Band 6 Staff Nurse have demonstrable previous Oncology / Haematology experience and experience in the administration of IV medications and Systemic Anti-Cancer treatment.
You will possess excellent communication skills, be reliable, enthusiastic and an effective team member committed to providing the highest level of service for our patients.

To coordinate and supervise a shift, communicating effectively with members of a multidisciplinary team, district nurses, and general practitioners to deliver high quality, evidence-led care to patients.

Main duties of the job

1. To assist the ward manager of Robert Tiffany Ward in creating and maintaining a safe, therapeutic clinical environment for all patients and their families who come to the area. The post-holder will work with the ward manager to co-ordinate all functions and activities to ensure a smooth running service to patients and their families.
2. To assist the ward manager in managing resources within the clinical area in a cost effective way. This includes maintaining and monitoring equipment and being proactive in managing staff rosters to minimise the use of temporary staffing.
3. To assist in providing strong proactive clinical leadership of the nursing and support workers that is motivating, supportive and sets clear boundaries resulting in high quality safe patient care. The post-holder will deputise for the ward manager and co-ordinate the nursing teams by liaising with the senior staff nurses and clerical staff to ensure continuity of care for patients and on-going managerial support for staff.
4. To work with the ward manager to provide a clinical learning environment that enables nursing staff to develop professionally and promotes the use of evidence in practice.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

1. To promote a patient focused multidisciplinary approach to care in collaboration with carers, other health professionals and external agencies.
2. To gain an understanding of the physiological, psycho-social, spiritual and cultural needs of the patients with cancer and their families. To develop a positive, realistic and supportive attitude to ensure that the needs of the patient and family are met. To provide support for anxious patients and/or relatives demonstrating empathy and understanding in a professional manner. Provide empathetic support when involved in the process of giving patients and/or relatives bad news acting as a role model for staff to ensure patients are treated sensitively.
3. To undertake appropriate assessment of the needs of the patient and family and organising their care whilst undergoing diagnostic and or assessment procedures within the units. To ensure good communication with other departments to maximise continuity of care and ensure appropriate information and support for patients following their visit to the unit.
4. To assess the educational and informational needs of patients and carers on Kennaway Ward. This includes producing and using appropriate materials to ensure optimum understanding of treatment and care.


Person specification


Education/Qualifications

* Registration
* Evidence of ongoing professional development
* Qualification in oncology or speciality
* Diploma or Degree level study (or equivalent)
* Recognised teaching qualification


Experience

* Experience in intravenous drug administration
* Sufficient post registration nursing experience in oncology or speciality to be confident and competent in using the required skills to do the job
* Experience in chemotherapy administration
* Experience in Clinical Management
* Evidence of relevant teaching experience
* Knowledge and understanding of clinical trials management


Skills Abilities/knowledge

* Venepuncture and/or cannulation skills

Flu Vaccination – What We Expect of our Staff

At The Royal Marsden we have an immune compromised patient population who we must protect as much as we can against the flu virus. Each year, seasonal flu affects thousands of people in the UK. Occurring mainly in winter, it is an infectious respiratory disease capable of producing symptoms ranging from those similar to a common cold, through to very severe or even fatal disease.

The wellbeing of our staff and patients is of the upmost importance to us, and it is the expectation of The Royal Marsden that all patient-facing staff have an annual flu vaccination, provided free of charge by the Trust.
