Tewkesbury Museum, 64 Barton Street, GL20 5PX
Background
Tewkesbury Museum has secured National Lottery funding to deliver a project to improve collections care, create a new exhibition, and expand outreach and group visits.
We are a small, volunteer-run museum and are looking for a freelance Project Manager to help trustees and volunteers deliver this work.
About the Museum
* Independent museum run by trustees and volunteers
* Based in a mid-17th-century timber‑framed building
* Well‑regarded, but with collections and exhibitions that need updating
* Long‑term aim: to be more relevant and engaging, with better cared‑for collections
About the Project
The project has three linked strands:
* Rationalisation – review parts of the collection in line with approved policies to improve care, access and use
* Rivers exhibition – develop a new, people‑focused gallery exploring how the Severn and Avon have shaped Tewkesbury
* Outreach and group visits – develop work with residential homes, schools and community groups
The Role
You will act as Project Manager, coordinating day‑to‑day delivery of the project. You’ll work closely with trustees and volunteers and be supported by a small steering group.
This is a hands‑on role suited to someone practical and organised, who is comfortable working across collections, exhibitions and community activity in a small organisation. The role reports to the Trustees.
Key responsibilities
* Keep the project on track against agreed timelines, milestones and funder requirements
* Support collections rationalisation in line with museum policy, ethical guidance and trustee decisions
* Help plan and deliver the Rivers exhibition, working with volunteers, community partners and suppliers
* Plan and deliver community engagement and oral history activity, ensuring appropriate consent and safeguarding
* Support visits outside the museum, group visits to the museum and the development of simple supporting materials
* Help gather feedback and contribute to funder reports
Person specification
* Experience managing museum or heritage projects
* Experience with collections, exhibitions or interpretation
* Strong organisational and communication skills
* Ability to work collaboratively with volunteers and trustees
* Understanding of ethical collections practice and inclusive working
* Experience of collections rationalisation or disposals
* Community engagement or oral history work
* Working in a small or volunteer‑run museum
* Working with the National Lottery or similar funders
Hours and pay
* 20–25 hours per week, worked flexibly over 3–5 days
* Some evening or weekend work may be required
* £15 per hour
* Travel and subsistence expenses are not payable
Contract status
This is a self‑employed contractor role, not an employed position.
You will invoice for hours worked and be responsible for your own tax and National Insurance.
No pension, holiday or sickness pay is provided.
