Main duties of the job
As Deputy Medical Director, you will play a key leadership role within HEIW's Medical Directorate, working closely with the Executive Medical Director and senior colleagues to deliver strategic priorities. You will:
Provide strategic oversight and leadership across medical education, training, and workforce development
Deputise for the Executive Medical Director in national forums and internal governance
Lead on quality and safetyacross all functions in theMedical Directorate,includingembedding HEIW's Quality Framework
Act as Deputy Responsible Officer for postgraduate doctors in training, supporting revalidation and professional standards
Collaborate with Welsh Government, NHS Wales, regulators, and education providers to shape national policy
Contribute to corporate planning, including the Education and Training Plan and Integrated Medium Term Plan (IMTP)
Support the development of multi-professional and interprofessional education and workforce transformation

Person Specification
Qualifications and Knowledge
* Full specialist or GP registration and a licence to practice with the General Medical Council
* Medically qualified with a background in Primary or Secondary Care, or Public Health
* Evidence of leadership and management training and a commitment to ongoing professional development
* Good knowledge of the policy context for postgraduate medical education in Wales and the UK, the NHS and a strong understanding of all aspects of medical career development
* Good knowledge of the policy context for pharmacy, dentistry, optometry and MAPs education and training in Wales and the UK
* Good knowledge of the regulatory context and requirements for medical, dental, pharmacy, MAPs and optometry professionals
* In depth knowledge of education, training and development systems and processes in health care systems and how workforce development and research underpin contemporary medical practice
* Understanding of the political agenda for Health and Social Care in Wales and across the UK
* Training /Development in Responsible Officer role
Experience
* Considerable leadership experience and management experience at a senior level in the NHS or related sector with a demonstrable track record of delivery
* Evidence of regular successful participation in appraisal.
* Significant experience of working as a hospital consultant, GP or consultant in Public Health
* Proven track record of leading change within complex systems
* Successful initiation and facilitation of strategic partnership working and alliances
* Experience and understanding of undergraduate and postgraduate medical education in both primary and secondary care settings
* Experience of multiprofessional and interprofessional healthcare education
* Experience in managing individual fitness to practice issues including legal and regulatory aspects.
Skills and Attributes
* Excellent written and oral communication skills
* Highly developed influencing and negotiation skills
* Ability to build trust and confidence with staff and stakeholders and to work collaboratively with both internal and external partners
* Strong analytical skills with the ability to find solutions to complex issues
* Welsh Language Skills are desirable (levels 1) in understanding, speaking, reading, and writing in Welsh.
