Overview

JOB TITLE: Teacher - Special

REPORTS TO: Principal


Professional Duties and Regulations

Regulations apply to teachers in Northern Ireland. This role requires carrying out professional duties and specific responsibilities as directed by the principal, board, and employing authority in accordance with the terms described in Schedule 3 and Regulation 5 of the Northern Ireland (1987) regulations.


Responsibilities

1. Planning
o Planning and preparing courses and lessons.
o Teaching, according to pupils\' educational needs, and setting and marking work.
o Assessing, recording and reporting on development, progress and attainment of pupils.
2. General
o Promoting the general progress and well-being of pupils and groups.
o Providing advice and guidance on educational and social matters, including future careers and sources of expert advice.
o Maintaining records and reporting on personal and social needs of pupils as appropriate.
o Communicating with parents and cooperating with external parties approved by the employing authority and Board of Governors.
o Participating in meetings related to these purposes.
3. Assessment/Reporting
o Providing or contributing to oral and written assessments and reports for pupils and groups.
4. Staff Development/Professional Development
o Participating in staff development and performance review if required.
o Reviewing teaching methods and programmes; pursuing further training and professional development.
o Advising and cooperating with the Principal and other teachers on course development, teaching materials, assessment and pastoral arrangements.
5. Discipline/Health and Safety
o Maintaining good order and discipline and safeguarding health and safety on and off premises.
o Participating in meetings related to curriculum, administration and pastoral arrangements.
6. Public Examinations
o Participating in arrangements for preparing pupils for public examinations, assessing them, and presenting for and supervising examinations.
7. Management/Administration
o Contributing to appointment and development of other teachers; coordinating or managing their work.
o Participating in review and development of curriculum, organisation and pastoral functions.
o Participating in administrative tasks, supervising support staff, and managing equipment and materials.
8. Hours/Days
* 195 days per year for full-time staff, with teaching days limited as specified; hours and breaks according to policy; average hours and weeks defined in terms of school year.
1. Staff Cover
* Supervising and teaching pupils when colleagues are unavailable, subject to policy on class sizes and enrolment.
2. General Note

Section 1 - Essential Criteria

* Qualifications/Professional Membership: Hold a teaching qualification which meets the requirements for recognition to teach in grant-aided schools in Northern Ireland.
* Experience: Minimum of 2 years’ demonstrable experience of using a range of effective classroom strategies to support and challenge children and young people of all abilities, including those with Special Educational Needs; experience in developing positive relationships; working with professionals to meet needs; using digital media/technology to enhance teaching; and continuing professional development.
* Other: Registered with the General Teaching Council for Northern Ireland (GTCNI) before taking up post; Pre-employment Check requirements.


Section 2 - Essential Criteria (Interview/Selection)

* Knowledge: Knowledge of the Northern Ireland Curriculum; SEND Code of Practice; teaching strategies to meet needs of pupils with SEN; nurturing approaches to positive behaviour.
* Skills/Abilities: Effective teaching and classroom management; inclusive learning environment for neurodivergent needs; initiative; collaboration with pupils, colleagues, parents and community; teamwork; motivation.
* Values Orientation/School Ethos: Evidence of alignment with the school\'s values and ethos.


Section 3 - Desirable Criteria

* Qualifications and Experience: Teaching in specialist provision attached to mainstream or special school; experience with CCEA Q Skills framework; experience using AAC systems.


Disclosure of Criminal Background

The Safeguarding Vulnerable Groups (Northern Ireland) Order 2007 defines regulated activity. If recommended for appointment to a post involving regulated activity, an Enhanced Disclosure of Criminal Background will be required. Please note you will be expected to meet the cost of the Enhanced Disclosure Certificate.
