The Role
An on-call firefighter is a paid professional employed by the fire and rescue service, ready to respond to emergencies and engage with the community. They balance everyday life and jobs until their pager sounds, at which point they become active firefighters.
Despite being called ‘part-time’, on-call firefighters are trained, experienced, and essential frontline responders, saving lives and protecting assets. They receive comprehensive training and develop personal skills necessary for emergency situations.
On-call firefighters come from diverse backgrounds, including full-time, part-time employment, self-employment, students, or those not currently employed. They dedicate their time to supporting their communities and the fire service.
This demanding role offers the opportunity to make a significant contribution, build strong team relationships, and participate in community events. They handle a variety of incidents beyond fires, such as flooding, road accidents, chemical spills, and animal rescues.
Previous Experience
No prior experience is required as training is provided. Enthusiasm and meeting essential requirements are key. You must be able to reach the fire station quickly and safely after being alerted, which requires good physical fitness.
Note: To qualify, you must live or work within 4 minutes of the fire station; applications outside this radius will be rejected.
