Overview
United Lincolnshire Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust have vacancies for a full time Consultant in Intensive Care Medicine. This role reports directly to the Clinical Lead for Intensive Care Medicine and will be based in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at either Lincoln County Hospital or Boston Pilgrim Hospital. Your preference of base site will be ascertained at interview.
The candidate could expect to practice up to 2 programmed activities (PA) of elective activity in another discipline subject to negotiation. You will primarily provide specialist critical care interventions to patients in Lincolnshire and supervise the health, safety and welfare of everyone within the workplace.
This role is open to consultant colleagues with dual accreditation.
Main duties
* Adhere to government legislation, national guidance and Trust policies and procedures to ensure the correct governance of the ICU.
* Conduct ward rounds twice per day to ensure patients receive safe and effective care.
* Prescribe medications and administer them in emergency situations as required.
* Provide supervision of Doctors, Middle Grades and Advanced Critical Care Practitioners.
* Deliver training and provide coaching / mentoring to Medical Students.
* Collaborate with the coordinator on duty alongside the Nursing workforce to ensure safe and effective operation of the ICU.
* Respond to clinical support requests from other teams (e.g., Emergency Department and Anaesthesia).
* Engage in difficult conversations with patients’ relatives as needed.
* Engage in research and innovation processes within the organisation.
* Continue professional development as a clinical team member, including completion of mandatory training.

The Intensive Care Consultants at ULHT operate within a group structure (LCHG) with the goal of improving care across the county. The ICU at Lincoln County Hospital provides 11 level 3 beds (or equivalent) and 7 beds at Boston Pilgrim Hospital.
As a Consultant in Intensive Care Medicine, you will be a go-to expert for advanced critical care in the adult patient population and will support other teams and departments as needed.

Job responsibilities (clinical)
The ICU operates 24/7 throughout the year, including bank holidays and public holidays. Typical working patterns may include daytime and night shifts.
At Lincoln Hospital, two consultants on duty: one on-site 8:00–16:00, the other on a 24-hour on-call shift (8:00–8:00). Non-resident hours must be within 30 minutes of the on-call site. At Pilgrim Hospital, one consultant covers a 24-hour period (8:00–8:00), with non-resident hours within 30 minutes of the on-call site. The role is contracted to a weekly job plan of 10 programmed activities (PA).
The ICU comprises 11 level 3 beds at Lincoln County Hospital and 7 beds at Boston Pilgrim Hospital. You will provide expert critical care to adult patients and support other teams and departments as needed, including providing expertise remotely by telephone or on-site as required.
Person Specification
Qualifications
* Recognised medical degree
* Fellowship of the Faculty of Intensive Care Medicine (FICM) or equivalent
* CCT in Intensive Care Medicine
* Registered with the General Medical Council (GMC) or eligible to be registered
Desirable
* Core Anaesthetic Training (CAT) completed
* Member of the Intensive Care Society (ICS)
* Focused Intensive Care Echocardiography (FICE)
Experience
* Training and experience in an ICU in an acute UK hospital
* Experience within the NHS and in leading teams
* Experience with MS Office applications (Word, Excel, Outlook)
Knowledge
* Knowledge of GPICS guidelines
* Awareness of clinical governance requirements; knowledge of Datix as a reporting and learning tool
