Job Duties

The Director of the University Counseling Center provides strategic leadership, clinical oversight, and administrative direction to ensure delivery of high-quality, accessible, and culturally responsive mental health services for the campus community. This position is responsible for advancing the institution’s mission by promoting student well-being, retention, and academic success through comprehensive counseling, crisis intervention, prevention programming, and outreach initiatives.

The Director oversees the development, implementation, and evaluation of counseling services, ensuring adherence to ethical standards, best practices, and regulatory requirements. Additionally, the role fosters collaboration with campus partners to support a holistic, student-centered approach to wellness, while leading efforts to address emerging mental health trends and the diverse needs of the student population.

Minimum Qualifications

Education, Experience, Licensure, or Certification required for entry into position: Must have be a licensed mental health professional in the state of Virginia (LPC. LCSW. Or Psychologist)


REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: Master’s degree from an accredited college or university in psychology, social work, mental health or related field

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Ph.D./Psy.D. in Clinical or Counseling Psychology. Must hold full Psychologist licensure/Mental health licensed in the state of Virginia. 3 years of demonstrated experience in progressive leadership and supervisory responsibilities. Knowledge of program evaluation, quality improvement initiatives, or data-driven clinical systems. Knowledge of preventative mental health education, outreach programming, and promoting student wellbeing. Strong budget management, policy implementation, and resource allocation and research and experience in developing and implementing data-driven strategies, including collecting, analyzing, and translating assessment and research findings into actionable initiatives that shape the vision and effectiveness of a university counseling center

1. Ability to develop, articulate, and implement a comprehensive vision for counseling services that aligns with the institution’s mission, strategic goals, and student success outcomes.
2. Effectively leads organizational change and innovation in response to emerging mental health trends.
3. Maintains advanced knowledge of clinical practices, crisis intervention, and evidence-based therapeutic approaches.
4. Ensures adherence to professional ethical standards, legal requirements, and best practices in the delivery of mental health services.
5. Strong skills in program development, budget management, policy implementation, and resource allocation.
6. Oversee daily operations efficiently while ensuring accountability, compliance, and continuous quality improvement. demonstrates a deep commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion by providing culturally responsive services that meet the needs of a diverse student population, including historically underserved and marginalized groups.
7. Provide clinical supervision to interns and residents and may carry a small caseload.
