Come work with us
The City of Leduc is seeking a detail-oriented and proactive Environmental Inspector (Temporary) to join our Environmental Services team. This is a unique opportunity to make a tangible impact on environmental management, residential lot grading, and community sustainability initiatives in Leduc. If you enjoy problem-solving, conducting inspections, analyzing data, and working with diverse stakeholders, this is the role for you.
What is the Opportunity?
As an Environmental Inspector, you will play a critical role in ensuring that residential developments meet municipal environmental standards, including lot grading compliance. You will review and approve final lot grading certificates, conduct site inspections, and communicate requirements to homeowners, landscapers, and builders.
This role offers a hands-on, diverse, and dynamic work experience, combining fieldwork, project management, stakeholder engagement, and technical analysis. It's an excellent opportunity to build your expertise, make meaningful contributions, and support the City of Leduc's commitment to environmental stewardship and sustainable growth.
What will you do?
In this role, you will:
* Conduct final lot grading inspections and review final grade certificates to ensure compliance with approved designs and municipal standards, helping to protect residents and maintain proper drainage.
* Liaise with residents, builders, landscapers, and internal teams to communicate requirements, resolve concerns, and manage disputes related to lot grading, urban hen, and bee keeping programs.
* Lead and support environmental initiatives by coordinating research, tracking project progress, preparing grant applications, and assisting with Council-approved programs, including the Environmental Plan, and Greenhouse Gas Reduction Action Plan initiatives.
* Coordinate and participate in public engagement events such as Arbour Day, Recycle Roundup, and other community-focused environmental programs.
* Support environmental site assessments and monitoring by collaborating with consultants and internal stakeholders to ensure effective remediation, regulatory compliance, and reporting.
* Maintain accurate records, produce detailed reports, and provide guidance on regulatory and compliance matters to ensure consistent environmental standards.
* Provide functional and technical guidance to consultants and internal staff on environmental projects, policy interpretation, and best practices.
Who you are?
You are an organized, detail-oriented professional who enjoys balancing field inspections, regulatory compliance, and project coordination with community engagement. You bring:
* A post-secondary diploma (minimum two years) or degree in Environmental Sciences, Engineering Technology, or a related field.
* A minimum of three years of relevant experience in municipal works, construction, environmental monitoring, public communications, or consulting.
* Knowledge of lot grading, stormwater management, environmental permitting, or urban agriculture regulations (hens and bees programs).
* Strong organizational and record-keeping skills, with the ability to maintain accurate reports and documentation.
* Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain complex technical or regulatory information in a clear, approachable way.
* A collaborative mindset and strong customer service orientation, with the ability to liaise effectively with residents, developers, consultants, and internal teams.
* Comfort working in both office and field environments, managing multiple projects, and adapting to shifting priorities and seasonal workloads.
* A valid Class 5 driver's licence, with the ability to safely travel to inspection sites, lot grading locations, and community events across Leduc and the surrounding region.
What we Offer?
This is a fixed-term opportunity to gain hands-on experience in environmental management and municipal operations while contributing to meaningful community initiatives. In this role, we offer:
* Practical, real-world experience conducting environmental inspections, supporting lot grading approvals, and implementing municipal environmental programs.
* Exposure to diverse environmental projects, including urban hen and bee programs, site assessments, grant-funded initiatives, and public engagement events.
* A supportive and collaborative workplace, where teamwork, learning, and mutual respect are part of how we work together.
* Access to the Employee and Family Assistance Program (EFAP), providing confidential support resources for you and your family.
* A free annual pass to City of Leduc recreation facilities, including access to drop-in programs to support your health and well-being.
