Consultant Community Paediatrician Neurodevelopment and Epilepsy

This is an exciting opportunity to join the Paediatric service hosted by Hull University Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust and be part of the dynamic team providing the service to meet rising demand across the specialist teams within Epilepsy, Community Paediatrics including Neurodevelopmental Paediatrics. The successful candidate will be clinically active in both Community Paediatric service and Acute Paediatric services. The post holder will be the fourth clinician joining the Paediatric epilepsy service. There are four Epilepsy specialist nurses in the team. The Paediatric Neurology team at Leeds provide the tertiary neurology support.


Main duties of the job

The post holder will also be clinically active in the Community Paediatric service and contribute to 50% of Acute Paediatric on call commitments and Consultant of the Week responsibility.

The successful candidate will work across Children Looked After service and Neurodevelopment. The post holder will be clinically competent in meeting the health needs of Children Looked After, including those undergoing adoption as appropriate to role. The post holder with also be expected to be part of the clinical team who contribute as Medical advisor to the Adoption Panel

The post holder should be competent in providing holistic support to children with Neurodevelopmental needs including linking multidisciplinary team.

Person Specification


Professional Registration

* Full Registration with the GMC
* GMC Specialist Registration (or expected inclusion within 6 months) Note - CESR applicants must be on the Specialist Register at the point of application


Qualifications and Training

* Valid APLS certificate
* Valid level3 safeguarding training
* Completion of Epilepsy SPIN module


Clinical Experience

* Is able to demonstrate having achieved the competencies equivalent to the higher specialist paediatric training in paediatrics
* Demonstrate experience in assessment and management of children with Epilepsy and neurodevelopmental disorders
* Able to undertake statutory children Looked After/adoption health assessments, including those with complex healthcare needs and provide written report
* Be able to provide advice to local authority adoption and fostering panels
* Ability to take full and independent responsibility for clinical care of patients


Management and Administration Experience

* Ability to manage and lead medical teams
* Ability to lead on smooth and efficient running of the unit
* Ability to organise, prioritise and manage high intensity workload
* Ability to develop, present and operationalise coherent ideas for service development/ delivery


Teaching, Audit and Research

* Experience of supervising junior medical staff
* Commitment to formal and informal teaching of medical staff, AHPs and medical students
* Evidence of participation in audit
* Ability to extrapolate clinical research evidence to care for individual patients
* Evidence of having conducted a practice-changing audit
* Experience of teaching/ training in clinical courses e.g., APLS Instructor, ALERT Instructor
* Original peer-reviewed research publications


Personal Attributes

* Ability to work flexibly in a changing health service
* Excellent manner with patients, being sensitive to their needs and fears
* Ability to communicate effectively with patients, relatives, GPs, Nurses and other health professionals and flex style as appropriate
* Willingness to undertake additional professional responsibilities at local, regional and national levels
* Ability to communicate effectively with external agencies and other disciplines
