The Environmental Suitability Service within Knowsley Council is responsible for a variety of services that range from the maintenance and development of green spaces and playing fields, tree planting initiatives, working with schools to develop environmental education, energy conservation projects and varying climate change actions from the decarbonisation of buildings to behaviour change projects. The teams within the service, particularly the Greenspace Development and the Climate Emergency team have a range of upcoming projects that the intern can both lead and support with.
As part of the Net Zero Delivery Plan 2026-2030 that outlines how the Council will continue it's journey to Net Zero, there is an action to create a Net Zero Sustainability Guide for Greenspace master planning.
Duties and responsibilities
When looking to improve and develop a new greenspace, there are several factor to be considered and this document will act as a 'check list' to ensure sustainability is in the heart of all new projects. The intern will be fully supported to complete this project by several member of the team but will primary report to the Council's Climate Emergency Manager.
Skills and experience
An interest and knowledge in both greenspace development and climate change is desirable. Due to the nature of the tasks, communication, organisational skills and time management are essential qualities for this. Ability to research, collate and analyse written and numerical data in order to draw logical conclusions is essential. Good communication skills and ability to adapt to ad-hoc enquiries relating to a variety of environmental issues including climate change, ecology, sport and physical activity projects.
This internship would be best suited to an individual looking for a career in greenspace development, planning, climate change or sustainability.
