Responsibilities

* Assist in the undertaking of post‑mortems within the mortuary, under the direction and guidance of the pathologist, facilitate viewings and identifications for families and the police, and be responsible for the admission and release of the deceased.
* Participate in the pro‑section and reconstruction of bodies at post‑mortem examination.
* Obtain samples for diagnosis as required.
* Accurately admit, monitor body condition of and release deceased patients.
* Plan and organise work priorities, managing own workload to policies and procedures.
* Ensure that the performance for post‑mortem procedures meets the standards laid down in the quality management system.
* Receive written authorisation from the Coroners Office to proceed to post‑mortem examination, following confirmation with the Consultant Pathologist, and liaise regarding the daily post‑mortem workload.
* Liaise with clinical and ward staff when a hospital post‑mortem examination is requested.
* Participate in new developments and the introduction of new methodology as required.
* Operate within the department to maintain rapid turnover of work.
* Correct and accurate receipt, recording and discharge of the deceased.
* Liaise with relatives of the deceased in a professional, sensitive and sympathetic manner.
* Responsible for decontamination of post‑mortem instruments, tables and rooms.
* Monitor and maintain body condition of the deceased following departmental protocol.
* Make judgements involving a range of facts or situations, some of which require analysis, e.g. decisions on appropriate advanced dissection techniques in RTA, suicides, and assessment of infection risks.
* Participate in specialised removal of organs and implants as directed, including dissection, reconstruction suturing, evisceration of organs and scalpel use.
* Liaise with forensic pathologists as required.
* Follow procedures for handling pathology specimens including toxicology and unfixed tissue.
* Be conversant with procedures for the use of high‑risk chemicals and reagents.
* Assist in the supervision and training of trainee APTs for the certificate and diploma examinations in Anatomical Pathology Technology as set by the Royal Institute of Public Health.
* Undertake departmental duties in a cost‑effective manner.
* Be aware of all relevant standard operating procedures and operate according to each procedure, paying particular attention to Health and Safety and any other appropriate regulations.
* Undertake routine maintenance of mortuary equipment.
* Use equipment safely, efficiently and cost‑effectively.
* Assist in the assessment of new equipment prior to service introduction.
* Maintain accurate records of the departments work.
* Undertake basic fault identification and remedial action as appropriate.
* Work within the Health and Safety standards of the department and the Health Board.
* Implement departmental standard operating policies and procedures.
* Maintain the mortuarys standard of accuracy in the recording and handling of all cases and specimens.
* Participate in the review and ongoing development of the quality management system, including document control, risk assessment and incident reporting. Maintain quality management systems to meet UKAS ISO15189 standards and HTA Codes of Practice.
* Operate and record relevant computerised data in accordance with departmental duties.
* Provide relevant information as authorised.
* Establish good working relationships at all times with colleagues, medical staff and others as required within the Dignity at Work policy.
* Ensure compliance with Health Board regulations regarding sickness, annual leave, special leave, study leave etc.
* Actively participate in personal development goals identified at personal review.
