Fire safety is one of those things you hope you'll never need — but when it matters, it matters completely. At Skanda Vale Hospice, where our care is unhurried, attentive and centred on human dignity, a safe environment is the foundation for all we do.
As a Volunteer Fire Safety Trainer, you help our team understand the building, the systems, and the habits that keep everyone — patients, visitors and volunteers — safe. Your care, experience and attention to detail ensure our fire safety training is not a tick-box exercise but something practical, relevant and easy to remember. You'll be an essential part of keeping the hospice compliant, confident and quietly prepared.
If you're not yet a qualified fire safety trainer but have relevant experience, we're open to supporting you through the necessary training. You'll share the role with one or more fellow trainers.
About Skanda Vale Hospice
Skanda Vale Hospice offers unhurried, highly individualised care and respite to families affected by life-limiting illnesses, completely free of charge. A beautiful and happy place, filled with laughter and vibrant colour, our hospice is nurse led and primarily run by volunteers. Volunteering with us means being a valued part of a dedicated team who give of themselves wholeheartedly. Compassion is at the heart of what we do, expressed by human kindness, generosity and a deep commitment to the well-being of everyone we care for and work alongside.
What will I be doing?
* Delivering Fire Safety Training: Leading small-group sessions (3–6 people), using an agreed syllabus tailored to the hospice building. Sessions run on a rolling schedule, with no mixed-level groups. You'll also help set up and conduct fire drills.
* Supporting Continuous Improvement: Attending quarterly trainers' meetings to share insights, raise issues, and help refine the overall training programme.
How much time should I give?
* One regular 2–2.5 hour session per week (around 8 hours per month), with flexibility for additional sessions if you wish.
What are the benefits of being a Volunteer Fire Safety Trainer?

What do I need to bring?
* Fire Safety Experience: Experience in fire training, firefighting, incident management or another similar relevant area is essential.
* Training or Teaching Experience (Optional): Experience in guiding others — formally or informally — is an advantage, as is any teaching or assessing qualification.
* Clear, Friendly Communication: The ability to explain safety information calmly and clearly, in person and in writing, and to handle sensitive information with discretion.
* Strong Organisational Skills: A steady, detail-focused approach that helps sessions run on time and supports accurate record-keeping.
* Basic Tech Confidence: Familiarity with Google Workspace is helpful, but experience with Microsoft Office and a willingness to learn is equally welcome.
What training and support will I be given?
* You will be supported by the Administration and Training Lead, and you'll receive a full hospice induction before you begin.
