Job overview

An excellent opportunity has arisen for an Occupational Therapist with a strong interest and experience in neurology, and a passion for community service provision, to join the Tower Hamlets Community Neuro Team (THCNT). Based at Mile End Hospital, you will be part of a large, friendly and highly successful multidisciplinary team delivering neurorehabilitation to patients in their own homes, or on-site in the gym or clinic. The team comprises Physiotherapists, Occupational Therapists, Speech and Language Therapists, Clinical Psychologists, a Neuro Navigator and Rehabilitation Support Workers, all working collaboratively to provide high-quality, patient-centred care.

In this role, you will be responsible for assessing, treating and clinically managing complex patients with a wide range of neurological conditions, some of which may be life-limiting. You will be responsible for assessing patients. identifying functional deficits and develop tailored treatment programmes for your caseload. The caseload includes individuals requiring both rehabilitation and long-term disability management for conditions such as acquired brain injuries, Parkinson’s disease and Motor Neurone Disease.

The ideal candidate will bring a genuine passion for community working and previous experience in neurology, along with excellent communication skills, initiative, enthusiasm and the ability to work both autonomously and as part of the wider multidisciplinary team.

Main duties of the job

To provide highly specialist assessment, treatment and clinical management of clients withneurological conditions, determining clinical diagnosis, functional deficits and developmentoftheOccupational therapytreatmentprogramrequired.

To be dynamic in developing efficient and effective Occupational Therapy working practices to assist inproducing afullyeffectivemultidisciplinary teamapproach.

ToworkwiththeAlliedHealthProfessionalLeadtodeveloptheservicetobestmeetchanginghealthandsocialcareagendas.

To be responsible for the clinical development and operational management of a team ofOccupational TherapistswithintheTowerHamletsCommunity Neuro Team(THCNT).

ToworkwithmultidisciplinarycolleaguestodeputisetotheAlliedHealthProfessionalLeadas required.

To work in collaboration with the acute Neurological Occupational Therapy service and CommunityHealth Services to provide integrated care for clients with a Neurological diagnosis withinTowerHamlets.

Qualifications

Essential criteria

1. Diploma or Degree in Occupational Therapy
2. HCPC Registration.
3. Evidence of CPD including attendance at recent post graduate courses/training relevant to Neuro rehab and disability management.
4. Supervision training
5. Fieldwork educators training

Desirable criteria

6. Member of British Association of Occupational Therapists
7. Involvement in a relevant COT special clinical interest group (eg NANOT)
8. Post graduate formal qualification (i.e. MSc Module or equivalent).
9. Leadership training

Experience

Essential criteria

10. Clinical experience in the field of Neurology, having completed band 6 rotations or equivalent.
11. Clinical experience in the NHS or similar health service across a range of acute/rehab settings.
12. Experience of working in a Multidisciplinary Team.
13. Experience of working with people with life limiting disease
14. Experience of contributing to professional development and clinical education of junior staff, students and assistants.
15. Experience of leading Audit/service improvement projects and working to timescale

Skills

Essential criteria

16. Ability to undertake comprehensive standardised and non-standardised assessments of clients with a Neurological diagnosis and a range of health and social care needs and multi-pathologies.
17. Ability to risk assess and identify a client’s deteriorating function and take appropriate action.
18. Ability to use a range of different treatment modalities for neurological rehabilitation and disability management.
19. Ability to prioritise, organise and delegate own workload autonomously
20. Ability to assess for/review medical devices & other rehabilitative equipment for clients, carers and others. This includes safe handling, fitting and demonstration.
21. Strong leadership skills enabling you to ensure quality service provision via evaluation of provision
22. Able to critique evidence base, apply to clinical practice and guide junior staff in this process.
23. Ability to communicate and present information, orally and in writing, in a clear and logical manner.
24. Ability to use advanced and innovative interpersonal skills of negotiation, persuasion and conflict resolution.
25. Ability to communicate effectively at all levels across the Department and Directorate.
26. Ability to deliver sensitive information and communicate with patients in an empathetic manner regarding their treatment and procedures, despite communication barriers.
27. Effective presentation skills.
