Position Details

College of Social Sciences

Location: University of Birmingham, Edgbaston, Birmingham, UK

Full‑time starting salary: £33,002 - £35,608, with potential progression to £39,906.

Grade: 6

Type: Full Time, Permanent

Closing date: 27th May 2026

The School of Social Policy & Society’s mission is to understand the world and to bring about practical change through research, teaching, professional training, policy advice and community work.


Role Summary

You will lead and manage a professional services team to provide administrative support for students and staff across teaching and research programmes.


Staff Management and Recruitment

* Provide leadership to a team of professional services staff responsible for delivering educational support.
* Recruit, line‑manage and mentor staff, fostering continuous development.
* Promote equality, diversity and inclusion, acting as a role‑model.
* Plan and recommend team structures and recruitment strategies, ensuring adequate resources.
* Manage staff performance and address concerns confidentially.
* Build relationships and set performance expectations.


Administrative Service

* Ensure accuracy and implement quality control data checks.
* Prepare and deliver management reports, analysing complex data sets.
* Troubleshoot general issues and, where necessary, raise them to the relevant department.
* Act as a key liaison between the designated area, College and University, keeping staff informed of policy changes.
* Contribute to process improvement and service delivery capability.


Education Support

* Manage teaching and learning related activity, ensuring compliance with university and regulatory regulations.
* Support quality audits and remedial action plans.
* Work with academic and professional staff to provide effective administrative service, advising on programme administration.
* Enhance the student experience through collaboration and stakeholder engagement.
* Lead education‑related projects.


Required Knowledge, Skills, Qualifications and Experience

* Degree level education (or equivalent qualifications and evidence of transferable skills).
* Significant experience in a similar role.
* Level 3 qualification such as a Level 3 NVQ or National Diploma.
* GCSE or equivalent grade C/4 in English and Mathematics.

* Skilled at communication and collaboration across all staff levels.
* Capable of influencing change and decision‑making, evaluating benefits and risks.
* Highly organised with strong team‑organisational skills and timely deadline delivery.

* Excellent communication skills with students, staff and external stakeholders.
* Attention to detail, confidentiality and sound judgement.
* Diplomacy and tact in handling confidential matters.
* Proficient with Microsoft Office suite.
* Ability to work to tight deadlines within a collaborative team.
* Adaptable to change in a dynamic environment.
* Develop and manage service delivery capabilities to high standards.
* Knowledge of the Equality Act 2010 and commitment to equal treatment.


Dimensions and Expectations

As a team manager you will lead and motivate a team providing an excellent service for a portfolio of teaching and research programmes. Your team’s customers include numerous academic staff and students. You may liaise with external partners and regulators as required.

Planning and organising: develop proactive initiatives, identify and recommend improvements, and work across the College and University.

Problem solving and decision making: provide expert advice and troubleshoot issues as they arise.

Internal and external relationships: liaise regularly with colleagues, stakeholders and customers with complex issues.
