The Pensions Appeal Tribunals Scotland is independent of Veterans UK and the Secretary of State. The function of the Tribunal is to hear and decide upon appeals concerning both the War Pension Scheme and the Armed Forces Compensation Schemes. Appointments are made by the Lord President of the Court of Session under paragraphs 2 and 2A of the Schedule to the Pensions Appeal Tribunals Act 1943. Under the Act, candidates should be: Legal:
* be an advocate or solicitor admitted in Scotland of at least five years standing;
* satisfy the judicial-appointment appointment eligibility condition within the meaning of the Tribunals, Courts and Enforcement Act 2007 on a 5-year basis; or
* be a member of the Bar of Northern Ireland or solicitor of the Supreme Court of Northern Ireland of at least five years standing.
Medical:
* A duly qualified medical practitioner of at least seven years standing.
* Those applying for the psychiatric member appointment should be Members of the Royal College of Psychiatrists.
Service:
* Have knowledge or experience of service in His Majesty's naval, military or air forces.
All tribunal sittings are held in Edinburgh or virtually. You will receive a daily fee for work undertaken, as well as reasonable travel expenses. You are likely to be allocated approximately ten sitting days per year.
