Cancer Administrator (Band 3 Cancer Support Line Operator & Administrator)

Closing date: 14 June 2026

Employment: Fixed term, 12 months, part‑time

Salary: £25,760 to £27,476 a year pro rata

Location: Royal Sussex County Hospital, Eastern Road, Brighton BN2 5BE, United Kingdom


Job Summary

An opportunity has arisen for a highly motivated individual to provide a comprehensive cancer support line operation and administrator service to the Cancer Support Worker Team Leaders, Cancer Support Workers and Clinical Nurse Specialists as directed by the Cancer Support Worker Team Leaders. The successful candidate must be able to work using their own initiative, but also as part of a team.


Responsibilities

* Monitor incoming telephone calls to the Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) and Cancer Support Worker (CSW) support lines; triage and escalating voicemails left by patients, relatives, GPs, and other stakeholders.
* Use electronic diaries, email and outgoing telephone contacts to redirect and signpost.
* Use CAREFLOW, EVOLVE, CRIS, Somerset Cancer Register and other Trust programmes to advise patients of follow‑up appointments, check scan reporting and locate most suitable services for patient signposting.
* Record and report all patient communication on the Somerset Cancer Register clearly and precisely, referring to CSWs and CNSs where necessary; escalates clinical concerns and arranges Holistic Needs Assessments as required.
* Coordinate with Oncology Secretaries to cancel or re‑book appointments as requested by Consultants, CNSs or patients.
* Monitor the CNS and CSW joint email box, triage, redirect and complete requests using own initiative and decision making.
* Assist with electronic referrals to services such as the Macmillan Welfare and Benefits Team, Community Palliative Care team and Counselling Services.
* Maintain good communication with Clinical Nurse Specialists, Cancer Support Workers and other staff outside the department, as well as patients and members of the public.
* When the relevant CNS is absent, ensure appropriate messages are taken or information escalated to the covering lead CNS.
* Attend team meetings as required.
* Complete any other clerical duties as required by the service and agreed with the line manager.
* Complete mandatory training courses required by the Trust and any other relevant training as directed by the Lead Cancer Manager.
* Participate in the Trust Individual Performance Review (IPR) process at least annually.
* Adhere to NHS Trust and department procedures and policies.


Key Qualifications & Experience

* Admin/Reception experience using office software.
* GCSE or equivalent in English and Maths.
* Knowledge of medical terminology (desirable).

* Clerical & organisational skills.

Visa and Recruitment Policy

This role does not meet the minimum criteria for visa sponsorship under current UK immigration rules; applicants must already have the right to work in the UK. If applying under a Graduate visa, a minimum of 18 months must remain on the visa at the time of application.
