* Band 5: £31,049 - £37,796 (subject to change from April 2026) 0.6 FTE, Part-time (21 hours), Permanent appointment Based in Liverpool An exciting opportunity has arisen for a dedicated Registered Biomedical Scientist to work within our UKAS Accredited Clinical Diagnostic Parasitology Laboratory.

The Clinical Diagnostic Parasitology Laboratory (CPDL) at LSTM offers a UKAS accredited local and nationwide diagnostic parasitology service for all specimens of human origin.

The Laboratory undertakes a range of diagnostic testing, adhering to ISO15189 standard, and provides accurate, timely results to assist clinical diagnosis.

The laboratory offers a broad nationwide service, diagnosing human parasitic diseases using microscopical, serological and molecular techniques.

The laboratory incorporates aspects of Microbiology, Haematology and Blood sciences within one unit.

The laboratory has strong links with and undertakes diagnostic testing of samples from NHS Trusts, private hospitals and private laboratories.

As a registered HCPC Biomedical Scientist, you will be an integral part of the Clinical Diagnostic Parasitology team at LSTM, performing a wide range of diagnostic tests for parasite diagnosis within the Clinical Diagnostic Parasitology Laboratory. The post holder will possess a Degree in Biomedical Sciences (or related subject) and be a HCPC Registered Biomedical Scientist.

Knowledge of basic quality control and assurance is essential, and you will be able to demonstrate excellent verbal and written communication skills and the ability to develop effective working relationships with a range of people.


Key Responsibilities

* Diagnostic duties
* Performing serology assays, both in-house and commercial, for the detection of a wide range of parasite antibodies
* Preparation of samples for microscopy, including concentration techniques
* Microscopy of blood for the detection of parasites
* Prioritising workload to ensure blood parasite diagnosis is performed in a timely manner in accordance with published turnaround times
* Microscopy of faecal samples for detection of parasites
* Microscopy of other bodily fluids, worms and insects for the detection of parasites
* Molecular techniques for the detection of parasite DNA
* Ability to discuss findings with colleagues
* Generating results of assays within published turnaround times
* Communication of results to users in a professional manner
* Treat all clinical samples as potential biological hazards, working in a safe manner, adhering to health and safety regulations at all times
* Safe use of laboratory chemicals and reagents in accordance with COSHH and Risk assessments
* Adhere to archiving protocols and assist with archiving of samples
* Washing of laboratory equipment and keeping all areas clean and tidy
* Control of clinical waste and use of the autoclave
* Read and understand relevant documents such as SOP’s, Risk assessments and COSHH documents
* Perform all work in accordance with departmental SOP’s
* Participate in departmental audits when required
* Participate in UKAS inspections
* Participate in EQA and interlaboratory comparison schemes with which the laboratory is enrolled
* Transcription and accuracy checking of documents and reports before issued by a senior staff member
* Attend regular Laboratory staff meetings and contribute to staff suggestions and continuous improvement
* Maintaining stock levels and informing senior staff members when items are at a re-order level
* Generating laboratory results for issue by a senior member of staff
* Specimen reception
* Manning specimen reception when required
* Adhering to local specimen reception policies
* Administrative duties
* Answering phone calls and giving results to healthcare professionals when required
* Administration duties as required
* Communication with all levels of the team, recognizing when issues or enquiries need to be referred to a senior member of staff
* Adhere to the quality management system
* Adhere to standard ISO15189 by following procedures in place within the department
* Participate in staff annual performance, development and review procedures
* Be responsible for own professional development and CPD in accordance with HCPC registered Biomedical Scientist standards


Qualifications

* Qualified to degree level in Biomedical science (or equivalent). This qualification must be recognized by the Institute of Biomedical Science (IBMS)
* HCPC registered Biomedical Scientist
* Experience in a clinical laboratory setting
* Post BMS registration experience in a pathology laboratory
* Experience in serology techniques such as ELISA
* Experience in diagnostic molecular techniques such as PCR
* Experience in recognition of parasites using microscopy techniques
* Knowledge of Health and Safety requirements for a clinical setting (For a full list of essential and desirable criteria please refer to the job description and person specification)
