We're looking for a Technical Solutions Director to join our team in Bradford or Leeds on a permanent basis. This hybrid role offers flexibility, with two days in the office and three days working remotely.
As our Director of Technical Solutions, you will lead the teams that design, build, and enhance the bespoke internal platforms and automation capabilities that power our organisation's operational performance. These systems range from internal products and workflow automations to tools developed to meet federation customer needs that have not yet matured into commercial offerings.
You will own and drive our RPA strategy, ensuring automation is deployed intelligently, securely, and with measurable impact for the business.
Working in partnership with fellow Engineering Directors, you will help shape and deliver the organisation's broader technology strategy. You'll collaborate closely with our Platform team to ensure internal solutions are modern, cloud‑native, and aligned with enterprise engineering standards.
This is a senior leadership role with responsibility for engineering excellence, operational reliability, long‑term vision, and effective engagement with stakeholders across the organisation.
What will you be doing?
* Lead and develop a hybrid onshore/offshore engineering team, overseeing the design, build, and ongoing improvement of bespoke internal systems.
* Set and own the long‑term technical strategy for internal solutions, ensuring they are scalable, secure, and aligned with the organisation's wider technology direction.
* Collaborate with fellow Engineering Directors to shape shared engineering standards, strategic priorities, and delivery principles across the organisation.
* Oversee end‑to‑end delivery of internal applications and platforms - from initial concept through development, enhancement, and lifecycle support.
* Manage prioritisation and release planning across multiple internal workstreams, ensuring roadmaps reflect business needs and deliver measurable value.
* Own and lead the Robotic Process Automation (RPA) capability, including standards, governance, delivery quality, and continuous improvement.
* Identify automation opportunities across the organisation, working with operational and business leaders to evaluate feasibility, benefits, and impact.
* Establish and embed engineering best practice for automation, ensuring solutions are maintainable, auditable, secure, and operationally robust.
* Mentor and develop engineering managers, software engineers, and automation specialists, fostering a culture of ownership, continuous improvement, and high performance.
* Act as a senior technical partner for stakeholders, translating business needs into clear technical direction and strategic plans.
* Work closely with the Platform team to ensure internal systems leverage enterprise‑grade GCP patterns, CI/CD pipelines, security frameworks, and infrastructure automation.
* Partner with Security, Architecture, Data, and Product leaders to ensure technology decisions are consistent, compliant, and aligned across the organisation.
We tend to look for people with:
Essential
* Extensive engineering leadership experience, with a strong track record of guiding high‑performing teams across diverse customer or stakeholder groups.
* Proven ability to lead and scale engineering teams, driving delivery excellence and fostering a culture of quality and innovation.
* Deep understanding of cloud‑native technologies, ideally with hands‑on experience building or governing solutions on GCP (or another major hyperscaler).
* Strong stakeholder influencing and communication skills, including experience engaging with senior leaders and C‑suite stakeholders to shape strategy and ensure technical and commercial viability.
* Expert knowledge of RPA technologies, automation best practice, and workflow optimisation.
* Solid architectural expertise across microservices, APIs, security, data flows, and event‑driven systems.
* Demonstrated experience defining and delivering technical strategy across multiple workstreams or product areas.
* Exceptional leadership capabilities, able to motivate teams, align priorities, remove obstacles, and drive meaningful outcomes.
* Strong grounding in modern engineering and operational practices, including Agile delivery, CI/CD, DevOps, and observability‑driven operations.
Desirable:
* Experience partnering with central Platform, Security, Architecture, or Enterprise Technology functions.
* Exposure to evolving internal tools into commercial‑grade products.
* Understanding of compliance and regulatory frameworks such as ISO 27001 or GDPR.
* Background in workflow automation, BPMN, low‑code platforms, or data‑driven application environments.
