This replacement post, which is based at Raigmore Hospital, Inverness, will provide general ENT services with a special interest that could be accommodated flexibly within the department. The Department of Otolaryngology covers a population of 240,000 in Highland and the Western Isles and 105,000 in Moray as part of a clinical network with Grampian.
Applicants should have a CCT in otolaryngology and be on the specialist register. We are specifically looking for a candidate with a general ENT training and the enthusiasm to develop a special interest. Due to recent changes within the department, we could flexibly support a number of special interests within the existing services including otology, paediatrics, rhinology or facial plastics.
There is a well-organised and well-established ENT service within the Highlands supplying clinical services to both the central population around Inverness and also the more remote and rural parts of the Highlands and Western Isles. Travel to these units is through some of the most attractive scenery in Scotland and the advertised post will potentially involve occasional visits to the Isle of Skye, Western Isles, Fort William, Dingwall, Golspie, Caithness and Elgin.
The post holder will be expected to support these services, working within the team centrally or peripherally to continue to provide a high class clinical service to the population of the region. There is a well-developed sub-specialisation within the department including Head and Neck Oncology, Otology, Rhinology, Paediatrics, thyroid/parathyroid surgery and Facial Plastics.
Raigmore Hospital is a modern District General Hospital of around 454 beds with extensive training responsibilities and serving a very wide geographical area. It is one of the 5 Cancer Centres in Scotland and has clinical facilities comparable with most University Teaching Hospitals with expanding research support and opportunities. Good links exist with the well-established Highlands and Islands Health Research Institute. The department plays an important role in the teaching of undergraduate medical students from the University of Aberdeen.
