The University of Aberdeen is seeking to appoint five talented and dedicated individuals to its governing body – the University Court – and two of its key Committees. Applications are invited from individuals with a successful leadership record within a public, private, or third sector organization, who are passionate about supporting an internationally competitive, research-intensive, and diverse university.

The new appointments to Court will ensure the continued successful delivery of the university’s priorities and objectives, the setting of its strategic direction, and a commitment to its values and mission.
Independent Court Member and Audit & Risk Committee Chair
This key role requires an individual with extensive senior audit and finance experience, professional qualifications, and insightful knowledge of current standards. The ideal candidate will have previous audit committee leadership experience, a strong grasp of governance, risk, and controls, and experience overseeing auditors. Demonstrating sound judgment, integrity, and a solid understanding of public or charity sector governance is essential.
Independent External (Lay) Member of Court Audit and Risk Committee (1 position)
We seek two individuals with experience as non-executive directors or trustees in the private, public, or voluntary sectors. Candidates should have the ability to critically scrutinize proposals, plans, risks, assurance, and performance, utilizing their professional knowledge. For the Audit and Risk Committee, experience in legal matters and understanding of corporate governance, legal, and regulatory issues are preferred. For the Remuneration Committee, relevant recent experience in designing and implementing senior remuneration and reward procedures, along with awareness of equality, diversity, and inclusion, is desired.
Independent Member of Court
This role requires a passion for higher education and senior experience in pensions or actuarial work, with relevant qualifications and knowledge of UK pensions regulation. Proven non-executive director experience and understanding of governance in the public or charity sectors are advantageous.
Governance Apprentice
This role offers the chance to shadow the University Court for one year, gaining skills, insights, and networks to build a foundation for future board roles. The ideal candidate will have a strong interest in higher education, governance, and board operations, along with excellent analytical, communication, and organizational skills.
