General Description:
The purpose of the IET/Computer Science Academic Advisor position is to provide academic advising to potential and continuing NOVA students in the IET/Computer Science program by helping them with verifying their program of study, course selection, and then making referrals to faculty advisors or appropriate NOVA offices.
Duties and Tasks:
1. Provide advising to NOVA IET students during walk-in hours
2. Answer student’s emails and telephone calls.
3. Advisors may also assist students using self-service functions (registration, etc.) as needed. Advisors will participate in conducting program information sessions at the college and local high schools.
4. Provide students with information on IET programs (ex: Year Up, GMU Advance, military alignment, credit for certifications).
5. Report directly to the IET dean.
6. Manage a caseload of students to support the achievement of the students’ goals including, but not limited to, ensuring proper program placement, successful enrollment, course completion, retention, graduation, transfer and/or job placement.
7. Conduct assessments of students’ needs to make referrals to supports and services.
8. Facilitate programs and workshops to support academic planning and advising.
9. Other duties as assigned.
This position is full-time and may require an occasional evening and Saturday at the beginning of the Fall, Spring and Summer semesters.
This position is restricted and is funded with non-continuous or non-recurring funding and is subject to continuation based on the fiscal year, funds and the needs of the college. Minimum Qualifications:

13. Familiarity with electronic student information systems.
14. General knowledge of the Information Technology or Emerging Technologies field.
15. Knowledge of College programs including admissions, orientation, placement testing, academics, financial aid, etc.
16. Knowledge of community college degree programs.
17. Strong service excellence, problem-solving and interpersonal communication skills.
18. Clearly articulated oral and written communication.
19. Skill in written communication, including the development of letters, memos, presentations, and course materials.
20. Skill in oral communication, including large and small group presentations and/or class lectures.
21. Proficiently skilled in computer usage, including Microsoft Office, e-mail, PeopleSoft Student Information System, Adobe Acrobat Reader, and researching information online.
22. Ability to independently plan and coordinate a variety of programs and projects.
23. Ability to collaborate effectively with college personnel, including administrators, counselors, and staff.
24. Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with a diverse student population.
25. Ability to work evenings and occasional weekend hours.
Minimum Requirements:
26. Experience in computer literacy, video conferencing, Google Applications, MS Excel, MS Word, and MS PowerPoint.
27. Advising and counseling experience.
28. Experience with diverse student populations.
