The Role & Key Responsibilities

From your first day with us you will be part of a policing family making a real difference, supporting the Force’s priorities to protect our communities, catch criminals and deliver an outstanding service. In this role you will be joining the Business Intelligence Team who are at the forefront of driving innovative work in deriving insights from the Force’s data and instigating significant business change. The team is central to the Force’s ambitions to use technology to drive efficiencies and service improvements for our communities. We are looking for a Software Engineer who can lead on the delivery of automated solutions that streamline our processes, enabling the force to focus its resources on improved service. This role is to provide technical leadership to design and deliver technical solutions utilising Microsoft Fabric and associated functionality, MuleSoft for systems integration as well as automation tools like Power Automate and Blue Prism.


The principal responsibility of the role is to contribute to the development of digital tools, processes and outputs, including the data infrastructure underpinning all BI activity, that support the wider organisation

Provide technical leadership on automation for the Force Lead and maximise the opportunities offered by Microsoft Fabric. Identify the best method for extracting data from source systems on a case-by-case basis. Understand, and be able to draw on, effective use of tools such as Notebooks, Dataflow Gen2 and PowerShell.

Manage credentials, including service accounts and interfaces with Azure Key Vault, to ensure connections are made in the most secure way. Design and deliver solutions using MuleSoft (for integration) as well as automation tools like Power Automate and Blue Prism

Build integrations with appropriate error handling and business logic to ensure there is no corruption, omission or duplication of ingested data. Apply the fundamentals of data transformation (such as cleaning and optimizing structure of data into fact and dimension tables) using Data Factory and/or supporting tools.

Ensure data brought into the data platform meets the needs of downstream users, including the BI Development team. Store and transform data using a medallion architecture, drawing on lakehouse and warehouse assets as appropriate. Oversee the operation and maintenance of daily and periodic pipelines, optimizing efficiency and proactively resolving issues when they occur.

This is a new role in the Force and there will be the opportunity to shape the role going forward

Work collaboratively with Digital, Data and Technical department and stakeholders from Operational Policing teams on architecture and data exploitation.

Skills & Experience

A degree in Computer Science, Information Systems or related fields. Equivalent experience in integration engineering is also acceptable.

Experience with data engineering tools is expected.

Expertise in MuleSoft Anypoint Platform for building integrations and APIs. Ability to design, build, test, debug, and deploy MuleSoft integrations following best practices. This includes proficiency with Anypoint Studio, DataWeave for data transformation, and API-led connectivity design principles (RAML or OAS for defining APIs).
Knowledge of Microsoft Fabric
Strong grasp of RESTful API design, SOAP services, and integration patterns.
Familiar with data formats like JSON and XML for API communication.
Experience implementing secure APIs (OAuth2.0, JWT) and managing APIs through MuleSoft’s API manager or similar.
