Health and Safety Catering Manager

Job Title: Health and Safety Catering Manager - Contract

Department: Catering / Facilities
Reports To: General Manager
Location: DN40
Salary: £19.23/hour
Contract: Fixed‑term till August 31st

Essential Requirements

Job Purpose

The Health and Safety Catering Manager is responsible for ensuring that all catering operations are compliant with statutory food safety, health and safety legislation, and organisational policies. This role provides leadership, training, and oversight to maintain the highest standards of hygiene, safety, and operational excellence across all food preparation, service, and storage areas.

Key Responsibilities

Health & Safety Management

3. Develop, implement, and monitor health and safety policies, risk assessments, and safe systems of work across catering operations.
4. Ensure full compliance with UK legislation including Food Safety Act 1990, Food Hygiene Regulations, HACCP, COSHH, and Health and Safety at Work Act 1974.
5. Conduct regular H&S audits and inspections of all catering environments, equipment, and workflows.
6. Investigate accidents, near misses, and incidents; produce reports and follow‑up actions.
7. Liaise with Environmental Health Officers (EHOs), auditors, and external inspectors.

Food Safety & Hygiene

8. Lead on creating, implementing, and maintaining Food Safety Management Systems based on HACCP principles.
9. Oversee temperature control logs, cleaning schedules, allergen procedures, and food storage compliance.
10. Ensure adherence to cross‑contamination controls and proper personal hygiene standards.
11. Monitor supplier compliance and food delivery processes.

Training & Staff Development

12. Deliver ongoing training for catering staff in: Food hygiene (Level 2/3) Allergen management Manual handling COSHH Safer food, better business
13. Maintain accurate staff training records and ensure all mandatory certifications are up to date.
14. Support team leaders and supervisors to promote a strong safety culture.

Operational Oversight

15. Work closely with Catering Managers, Chefs, and Supervisors to ensure safe workflows and consistent standards.
16. Assist in the development of operational procedures, kitchen layouts, and equipment specifications to maximise safety.
17. Monitor and evaluate supplier performance relating to food safety.
18. Ensure proper maintenance, servicing, and cleaning of all catering equipment.

Emergency Preparedness

19. Develop emergency procedures for fire, equipment failure, contamination incidents, and allergen exposures.
20. Support evacuation procedures and ensure all catering staff understand emergency roles.

Skills & Experience Required

Essential

21. Level 3 or higher in Food Safety & Hygiene (Level 4 preferred).
22. NEBOSH / IOSH health & safety qualification (or willingness to work towards).
23. Proven experience in a catering or hospitality safety management role.
24. Strong knowledge of HACCP, COSHH, risk assessments, and food safety law.
25. Excellent communication and training delivery skills.
26. Ability to work independently and manage multiple locations or units.
27. Strong audit and reporting skills.

Desirable

28. Experience in education, healthcare, corporate catering, or large‑scale hospitality.
29. First Aid qualification.
30. Experience with EHO inspections.
31. Knowledge of allergen regulations and cross‑contamination management.

33. Confident, supportive leader with a positive and proactive approach.
34. Passionate about maintaining the highest safety standards.
35. Strong problem‑solver with the ability to work under pressure.
36. Approachable and able to coach and motivate staff at all levels.

Working Conditions

37. Mixture of office-based work, onsite kitchen inspections, and staff training.
38. Requires flexible working including occasional early mornings, evenings, or weekends.
39. Travel between sites may be required (depending on organisation).
