At Babcock we’re working to create a safe and secure world, together, and if you join us, you can play your part as a Rigger at our Devonport Royal Dockyard site.
The role
This is an exciting opportunity for someone who enjoys hands‑on, physical work, problem‑solving, and contributing directly to projects that matter.
Day-to-day, you’ll be part of a specialist trade at the heart of our waterfront operations, supporting the manufacture, testing and installation of marine‑based rigging across a dynamic naval environment. No two days are the same. You’ll work with bespoke equipment, collaborate with skilled engineers and production teams, and play an essential role in enabling the safe operation of critical defence assets.
1. Surveying, measuring, manufacturing and testing rigging components used across vessels and waterfront operations.
2. Installing parafoils, safety nets, halyards and dressing lines onboard various platforms.
3. Operating winches, davits and associated lifting equipment safely and effectively.
4. Using sewing machines and undertaking basic sail making for rigging‑related fittings.
5. Working collaboratively with production engineers, birthing officers and operational teams across the site.
This role is full time, 35 hours per week and is based on site at Devonport Royal Dockyard.
Essential experience of the Rigger
6. Knowledge of LEA and LOLA 98 processes or accreditations.
7. Experience in rigging manufacture or similar trade background.
8. Strong understanding of bottle screws, shackles, thimbles and blocks.
9. Ability to work confidently and safely at height.
10. Slinging and lifting experience (training provided where required, including forklift and slinger duties).
We value difference and don’t have a fixed idea when it comes to background or education, provided you can show the required level of experience and/or willingness to learn then we would like to hear from you.
Security Clearance
The successful candidate must be able to achieve and maintain Security Check (SC) security clearance for this role.
Many of the positions within our company are subject to national security clearance and Trade Control restrictions. This means that your eligibility for certain roles may be affected by your place of birth, nationality, current or former citizenship, and any residency you hold or have held.
