High Consequence Infectious Disease Nurse Specialist

Join Sheffield Children's as a HCID Nurse Specialist, playing an important role in NHSE's expansion of paediatric HCID services. You will lead the development of education, training, policies, and protocols to prepare our teams to safely care for children with high consequence infectious diseases. Working with infection prevention, infectious diseases, and health & safety teams, you will help ensure safe, compassionate care for children and their families.
About You:
Registered Nurse (RSCN or RGN) with current NMC registration
IPC qualification with knowledge of HCID management and transmission risks
Experience in senior nursing roles with expertise in policy development
Experience with developing healthcare training, including simulation and competency assessments
Main duties of the job
You will report to the Lead Nurse (IPC), and your responsibilities will include:
Lead development and implementation of HCID-related education, training, and governance policies
Collaborate with teams across local, regional, and national levels
Deliver evidence-based training and simulation programmes tailored for HCID preparedness
Provide pastoral support and communicate complex information to diverse audiences
Conduct audits, evaluate training effectiveness, and promote service improvement
Maintain knowledge of HCID risks, infection control measures, and emergency response frameworks

Person Specification
Qualifications and Training
* RN Child (RSCN) with current NMC registration or RN adult (RGN) with extensive HCID knowledge and current NMC registration
* Educated to master's level or equivalent knowledge and skills gained through a combination of in-depth experience, post- graduate or post registration study and/or courses
* Recognised leadership/mentoring/coaching course
* HCID experience
Experience
* Experience in managing highly contagious infectious diseases, including outbreak response and containment strategies
* Experience of senior nursing roles, leading teams and ensuring adherence to best practices in patient care
* Experience designing and delivering healthcare training programmes, including simulation exercises and competency-based education
* Experience in the safe admission, treatment, and discharge of HCID patients, ensuring adherence to clinical guidelines
* Experience conducting audits, evaluating training effectiveness, and reporting findings to drive continuous improvement
* Comprehensive understanding of HCIDs, transmission risks, and infection control measures
* Understanding of healthcare governance frameworks and experience in developing and implementing policies for emergency preparedness and response
* Ability to identify training gaps and deliver evidence-based education to both clinical and non-clinical colleagues
* The ability to communicate with a range of different people within the organisation and present information in a way that is easy to understand to effectively engage with people
* Able to manage complexity and work in an ambiguous or changing environment
* IT literate including sound knowledge of MS Office software such as; Excel, PowerPoint etc
