About The Role

Brighton & Sussex Medical School (BSMS) is seeking to appoint a Clinical Associate Professor or Professor of Oncology, depending on career stage, with an honorary consultant contract at University Hospitals Sussex. The role holder will have a track record in clinical trials and will provide clinical leadership as Clinical Director for the Brighton and Sussex Clinical Trials Unit. Partnership working will be important, including with the Sussex Cancer Centre in the University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust and the Health and Care Research Partnership.

All positions at the Associate Professor level and above are senior career-grade teaching and research positions. They are expected to show academic leadership, supporting the management and strategic planning of the School and the Universities. Grant applications and funding acquisition will be a significant part of the role to support oncology research within Sussex. The post will support the development of a clinical academic oncology group within the Trust and BSMS, and a further Associate Professor post linked to the Trust will be developed with the input of this post holder.

Current key strengths at BSMS include global health/infection, mental health and translational haemato‑oncology. We seek to widen this to other oncology areas, including both solid and haematological malignancies, and welcome applications from candidates with expertise in either medical or clinical oncology. Development and success of the Sussex Cancer Research Centre (SCRC) illustrates our commitment to cancer research.

About You

The postholder will lead their own programme of research and will support clinical trials, benefiting from BSMS and parent universities' extensive facilities and expertise. This includes laboratory space (if required) and health outcomes research, supporting cross‑cutting BSMS research themes of health inequalities, population health/prevention, and the health of coastal communities.

The successful candidate will undertake research within the Department of Clinical and Experimental Medicine, contribute to research leadership and research‑led undergraduate and postgraduate courses, and provide clinical leadership to the Clinical Trials Unit, which will have two PAs associated with this activity. They will provide mentorship and guidance to research‑active academic and NHS colleagues in Sussex and help develop strategies for increasing research income and trial recruitment.

They will contribute to teaching across the School, take a leadership role in undergraduate education, engage with external organisations and networks, support student‑led clinical/medical oncology activities, and enable clinical colleagues to engage with the teaching programme, including placements, SSCs, and 4th‑year Individual Research Projects.

For Professorial level, the candidate will be expected to make a broad, sustained contribution to their field nationally and internationally, demonstrating exceptional performance in research, innovation, education, and leadership. They will undertake formal School‑level leadership roles appropriate to their background and portfolio.

The postholder will hold a 0.5 FTE role as honorary consultant with UHSFT, with clinical duties in the Department of Oncology. The post is open to a Medical or Clinical Oncologist who has completed specialist training and holds a CCT.
