Salary - £50,000 - £60,000 dependant on experience
Hours - Monday to Friday, 36.25 hours per week with flexible, hybrid working (after successful completion of probationary period)

About the Accounts Manager role

This is a 12-month fixed-term opportunity for an experienced Accountant at Assistant Manager or Manager level to join our Lewes Business Hub. You'll take ownership of a varied client portfolio, lead the delivery of accounts from planning to completion, and support the development of a growing team.
This role is ideal for an Assistant Manager ready to step up, or an experienced Manager seeking a high-quality maternity cover role within a supportive, progressive firm.
Key responsibilities
Client & Portfolio Management
* Manage a varied portfolio of clients across a range of sectors
* Develop strong client relationships, ensuring expectations, deadlines and service levels are met
* Identify opportunities for additional services and cross‑selling
* Assist with proposals and business development activity
* Communicate effectively with clients, suppliers and internal stakeholders
* Report progress and planning directly to Partners
Accounts Delivery
* Oversee the accounts process from planning through to completion, allocating work appropriately across the team
* Review and finalise company accounts, corporation tax returns, management accounts and VAT returns
* Manage jobs to realistic budgets and support fee collection
* Demonstrate advanced technical knowledge and remain up to date with legislative, technical and regulatory changes
* Share best practice and contribute to process improvement initiatives
People & Team Leadership
* Conduct 1:1s and appraisals
* Support training and development
* Address underperformance constructively
* Contribute to a positive, high‑performing team culture
About you
We are looking for candidates with the following skills and experience:
* ACA/ACCA qualified or AAT qualified with minimum of 2-5 years portfolio management experience. Will also consider QBE.
* Candidates currently operating at Assistant Manager level who are ready to step up, or experienced Senior/Manager-level candidates with prior people or portfolio management exposure.
* Strong technical knowledge of accounting standards
* Previous knowledge and experience of a broad range of sectors would be an advantage
* Working knowledge of accounting software including Sage and Xero, previous use of CCH would be an advantage; experience of Sage50 / Netsuite also desirable
* Strong Excel skills (including vlookup, sumif and Pivot Tables).
* Professional, credible and confident manner
* Strong organisational and planning skills, with the ability to manage multiple assignments concurrently
* Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal
* Confident engaging with clients and building trusted relationships
* Proven ability to motivate, support and influence others
* Willingness to have constructive but challenging conversations where performance issues arise
