Job overview

Choices College (formerly Project Choice) is a supported internship programme that aims to support young adults with learning difficulties, disabilities or autism to become employment ready.

The role of a student support worker is to support our interns on a one to one basis within a workplace setting to enable them to reach their full potential

Due to the bespoke nature of this project we cannot accurately predict the number of hours support the students will need, and the level of support may fluctuate across the academic year. For these reasons we cannot guarantee the number of hours offered. This is a 0 hour contract.

These posts are therefore only suited to applicants that do not require guaranteed full time hours and are able to be flexible on the hours worked, and areas worked within a local geographical area.

We are currently looking for candidates to support in the Sheffield area. Willingness to travel is essential.


Main duties of the job

The College support worker's main duties will include attending work placements with the students to support and develop the learning and embedding of work based tasks. Maintaining weekly detailed individual records for each student that meet inspection requirements.

A passion for supporting students with SEN to meet their full potential is essential for this role.

Key areas of responsibility include:

* Managing the day to day delivery of 121 support for a student with autism, learning disability or Disability
* Delivering high quality TSI based learning.
* Supporting mentors to support student.
* The interpretation of sensitive information supporting very anxious student to learn to work
* Assisting in the development of bespoke learning
* Reporting and Communicating information effectively and efficiently to area manager and mentor.
* Supporting the student 1:1 in a classroom environment.

Colleagues with a contractual office base are expected to spend, on average, at least 40% of their time working in-person.

Staff recruited from outside the NHS will usually be appointed at the bottom of the pay band.

To be eligible for sponsorship through the Skilled Worker route you’ll usually need to be paid the ‘standard’ salary rate of at least £38,700 per year, or the ‘going rate’ for your job, whichever is higher. Qualifications

* Qualifications to include GCSE/Functional Skills in English Language, NVQ/QCF, ECDL or equivalent level of knowledge
* Training in Systematic Instruction
* Autism training


Knowledge and Experience

* A knowledge and understanding of a variety of special educational needs
* Experience of working 1:1 with students who have Special Educational Needs
* Knowledge of the Post-16 education
* Experience of working in a learning environment supporting students


Values and Behaviours

* To champion the rights of students with diverse learning disabilities
* Aware of the impact of own behaviour on others
* Have an understanding of, and a commitment to Supported Internships
* Complies with legislation and organisational policy on health, safety and risk management

* Willingness to travel


Skills and Abilities

* Uses a range of communications channels to build relationships including excellent report writing, data entry, and telephone skills
* Good planning, record keeping and organisational skills to support teaching staff in planning and delivery of sessions
* Enthusiasm for the subject area and awareness of learners’ needs and expectations and the ability to value these in your teaching support
* Awareness of the additional needs (non-educational) with which the students may present and which may need referral to other team members
