Job Description

At Legal & General, our customers are at the heart of everything we do. Our Customer Payroll team plays a crucial role in delivering accurate and timely payments that directly support customer wellbeing. We're looking for a Payroll Operations Subject Matter Expert to bring technical payroll expertise, strong analytical skills and a collaborative mindset to our high‑performing team. If you're passionate about enhancing processes, supporting colleagues and driving excellent customer outcomes, we'd love to hear from you.

What you'll be doing:

Providing expert technical support across payroll processing, reporting and operational controls
Leading on complex payroll queries, investigations and escalations
Supporting system, process and control improvements including testing and documentation updates
Conducting quality checks and monitoring activity to ensure accuracy and risk alignment
Ensuring regulatory, legislative and internal process requirements are understood and applied
Identifying and recommending opportunities for continuous improvement across teams
Supporting colleagues with consistent training, guidance and technical knowledge
Contributing SME insight to projects, audits, initiatives and wider business engagement

Qualifications

Who we're looking for:

Strong experience in pension payroll environments, ideally with 10,000+ volume processing
Solid understanding of payroll processes, reconciliations, exceptions management and variance analysis
Confidence in analysing and interpreting financial and technical payroll data
Ability to engage, influence and collaborate with colleagues across different teams
Strong awareness of payroll regulation, risk and controls
Ability to apply sound judgement and problem‑solving in complex scenarios
Commitment to delivering fair customer outcomes and embedding Conduct Risk principles
Adaptability, initiative and a positive approach to change and continuous improvement
