Senior Electrical Engineer – Environment Agency

Overview
This role is an exciting opportunity for an experienced electrical engineer with knowledge of high, medium, low and extra‑low voltage electrical systems and equipment to join the Environment Agency’s Standards and Engineering team as a Senior Electrical Engineer. Expertise relating to control systems design and SCADA / telemetry systems would be beneficial.
As part of our Technical Authority, you will provide technical engineering leadership and support to the whole organisation to meet objectives of safe, reliable and sustainable assets and meet commitments to net zero carbon. You will manage, develop and maintain electrical engineering standards, including electrical safety rules, for HV and LV power systems and control systems within assets such as pumping stations, water management and flood defence structures and monitoring sites.
Responsibilities
 * Influence and shape how we deliver service into the future as part of the Standards, Asset Management and Engineering Directorate.
 * Provide technical engineering leadership and support across the organisation.
 * Develop, deliver and maintain competency and skills guidance for all employees managing or carrying out work on our electrical systems and equipment.
 * Manage, develop and maintain electrical engineering standards and safety rules.
 * Support the delivery of safe systems of work, risk assessments, method statements and tests of high and low voltage electrical systems.
 * Hold a national incident response role (normal or out‑of‑hours).
 * Work collaboratively with the MEICA Engineering Standards team and across the business.
Qualifications & Experience
 * Working knowledge of the Electricity at Work regulations and BS 7671 IET wiring regulations.
 * Working knowledge of control systems, including IEC 61508, IEC 62061 and BS EN 13489, and telemetry / SCADA systems.
 * Knowledge of high and low voltage generation and distribution systems.
 * Experience drafting and publishing electrical policy, instructions and guidance.
 * Experience in risk assessments, method statements, safe systems of work and proving dead of high and low voltage electrical systems.
 * Understanding of risk‑based maintenance philosophies, Failure Mode Effect Analysis, reliability systems and processes.
 * Excellent work‑management, team‑working and communication skills.
 * Current membership of a recognised engineering institution and Chartered Engineer registration with the UK Engineering Council, or evidence of working toward registration within 12 months.
 * UK driving licence.

Additional Information
This is a hybrid role; a base location will be allocated near your home. Some travel and overnight stays may be required. The role includes an incident management objective in your development plan, with appropriate training provided.
