Clinical Nurse Specialist – Community Paediatrics based in Luton

Band 7 (Band 6 until V300 Non‑Medical Prescribing qualification is completed)

Are you an experienced, qualified nurse with experience of working with children? Do you want to develop your role and skills within a supportive multidisciplinary team?

We are seeking highly skilled and competent nurses (RN, RSCN, RMN, or RLDN) to train to become Clinical Nurse Specialists in the community paediatric service.

The post holder will be a qualified nurse with extensive experience working within a multi‑agency team. They will either have a Non‑Medical Prescribing qualification or be willing to undertake this in the first year. The ideal candidate will also have a post‑registration Specialist Community Practitioner qualification – Health Visiting or School Nursing – and consolidated experience as a band 6 practitioner.

This is a highly specialist post and all training will be provided for the right candidate.


Responsibilities

1. Nature of Work. The post holder will undertake clinical interviews, take a medical and developmental history, carry out observations of behaviour, and complete and interpret standardised assessments to assess for a range of complex neuro‑developmental conditions, including diagnosing as required.

Provide specialist advice in keeping with NICE guidance and local guidelines, and support transition planning with adult services.

2. Planning. Prioritise workload and plan daily schedules to meet national and local service needs.

Liaise closely with other services to provide a coordinated and seamless service for children and young people and support development of care pathways.

3. Project Involvement. Participate in specific projects across the department and trust.

4. Patient Contact. Start, monitor and adjust pharmacological treatments and liaise with GP in line with shared care protocols; discuss, agree assessment outcomes and diagnosis with the child/young person, carers and health professionals.

5. Policy Development. Review current caseload, referral, assessment and review criteria and develop nurse‑led efficient pathways; provide monthly activity data, participate in trust‑wide initiatives, contribute to audits and research findings to improve services.

6. Prescribing. The post holder must be an independent non‑medical prescriber and, if already qualified, practice as such as part of the role.

Communication. Demonstrate excellent communication with children, young people, carers and families of all ages, including those with complex developmental difficulties and neuro‑disability.

Maintain effective working relationships with multidisciplinary and multi‑agency professionals both internally and externally; provide education to parent groups and teaching staff as appropriate and facilitate therapeutic groups.

Budgetary Responsibility. Maintain identified equipment, report required servicing or replacement to line manager.

People Management. Provide management supervision and line management where appropriate; assist in developing induction programmes and learning environments for students and colleagues.

Research & Development. Contribute to audits and research findings, review care pathways, involve children and families in clinical reviews, and maintain a critical understanding of current practice.

Clinical and Practice Governance. Observe confidentiality, comply with data protection, and maintain professional registration with relevant body.

Safeguarding. Carry out duties in line with safeguarding policies and carry out conflicts with East of England Community Health and Care NHS Trust Equal Opportunities and Workforce Diversity and Inclusion Policies.

Transport and Driving. The post holder must be a qualified driver and be prepared to travel across the trust.


Qualifications & Training

* Registered Nurse / Learning Disability (RNLD), Mental Health (RNMH), Children's Nurse (RNC)
* Independent Non‑Medical Prescriber qualification (V300) or commitment to undertake training
* Specialist Community Practitioner qualification – Health Visiting or School Nursing


Experience

* Experience of working with children/young people and families with complex needs
* Extensive experience of care assessment, planning and implementation
* Knowledge of neuro‑developmental disorders (ADHD, ASD) underpinned by theory and practice.


Knowledge & Skills

* Excellent communication skills and fluency in English with children and young adults
