The Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine (LSTM) invites applications for the position of Postdoctoral Research Associate within the Department of Tropical Disease Biology. This part-time role will support the department’s expanding research portfolio in the areas of infectious diseases, antimicrobial chemotherapy, and antimicrobial resistance (AMR).
Under the supervision of Professor Adam Roberts, the successful candidate will be responsible for contributing to and overseeing several research projects, with a particular focus on the microbiological aspects of early-stage antimicrobial drug discovery. Key duties will include the preparation and handling of large libraries of bacterial isolates for high-throughput antimicrobial screening and whole genome sequencing.
The postholder will also provide oversight and direction on projects aimed at characterising phenotypic and genotypic antimicrobial resistance across a range of bacterial species and environmental or clinical sources.
This position offers an exciting opportunity to contribute to impactful research addressing global health challenges in antimicrobial resistance and infectious disease.
Key Accountabilities:
* Design and implement a high throughput workflow to undertake microbiological screening of bacteria isolates for drug discovery purposes.
* Design and implement a high throughput workflow for bacterial genome sequencing.
* Oversee ongoing antimicrobial resistance projects.
Data analysis and communication
* Integrate microbiological and bioinformatic data to allow prioritisation of bacterial isolates based on likely novelty of antimicrobial molecules.
* Analyse and interpret phenotypic and genotypic antimicrobial susceptibility data.
* Present research findings at internal meetings, conferences, and workshops to disseminate knowledge and foster collaboration.
* Engage with academic and industry partners to facilitate knowledge exchange and collaborative research endeavours.
* Prepare manuscripts, technical reports, and assist in the preparation of new funding proposals.
Mentorship and training
* Mentor and train junior researchers, students, technicians, and lab visitors. Formally supervise PhD students.
* Foster a collaborative research environment to encourage skill development and innovation.
Safety and compliance
* Maintain a safe and efficient laboratory environment, ensuring adherence to all institutional and regulatory safety protocols.
* Conduct risk assessments and ensure compliance with biosafety and chemical safety regulations.
The ideal candidate will demonstrate:
* PhD in infectious disease microbiology
* Extensive postdoctoral Research experience
* Planning, coordination and implementation of research projects in infectious diseases and antimicrobial resistance (AMR)
* Detailed knowledge of microbiology within the antimicrobial resistance space,
* Teaching microbiology to undergraduate and postgraduate students.
* Management of international projects and consortia.
* A strong publication track record
