Job Description:

Job overview

An exciting new opportunity has arisen for a substantive consultant paediatric nephrologist to join the GOSH paediatric nephrology team.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

This is a full-time post, and the post holder will be part of the Paediatric Nephrology department, in the Body, Bones and Mind Directorate at GOSH. The position is advertised as a full-time 10PA post, but requests to work less than full time will be considered. The post holder will participate in the on-call rota on a 1 in 8 basis, supporting the acute nephrology service on Eagle ward, across the hospital and the wider region.

The post holder will otherwise primarily be involved in outpatient work, managing the care of children in several specialist nephrology clinics (including but not limited to renal tubulopathies, glomerular disease, renal genetics and stone clinics). In addition, the post holder will support the General Nephrology outpatient service and will be required to support additional clinics for consultants covering additional acute on-call work. See detailed JD for the outline job plan for Direct Clinical Care and Supporting Professional Activities.

Specific Clinical Duties

We anticipate that the appointee will undertake approximately two speciality clinics per week and one general nephrology clinic every week. The appointee will be expected to participate in relevant weekly meetings at GOSH. The appointee will participate in the clinical supervision and training of the junior medical staff.

Main duties of the job

GOSH Renal Unit Information

The Renal Unit, the largest in the UK, comprises a 14-bed ward located in the New Morgan Stanley Clinical Building alongside a Transplant / Dialysis Unit. We provide a comprehensive diagnostic and treatment service for children with renal disorders, with an annual average of 600 admissions, 6000 outpatients, 25-39 renal transplants and 65 patients on the peritoneal or haemodialysis programme. We cover every aspect of paediatric nephrology with expertise in congenital renal anomalies, nephrotic syndrome, renovascular hypertension, vasculitis, tubular, glomerular, metabolic and stone disorders. Very strong working links exist with paediatric urology, radiology, pathology and rheumatology. Surgical care of patients requiring kidney replacement therapy (KRT) is provided by a team of seven transplant surgeons. The renal ward is run by two senior ward sisters and a junior sister and practice educators. There are 6 nurse practitioners or advanced nurse practitioners across haemodialysis and specialist clinics. There are 6 clinical nurse specialists for CKD stage 5 patients and patients on KRT, 4 renal dieticians, a senior renal pharmacist, clinical psychologists, consultant family therapist, social workers, teachers and play therapists.
