Job overview

The successful candidate will have a unique opportunity to join MFT at a time when Manchester is at the forefront of healthcare redesign, developing a model of care that will help the NHS and other care providers in Greater Manchester provide quality services that are safe, accessible and sustainable for future generations. In light of these changes, we are looking for a dynamic, innovative and highly motivated registered practitioner (Nurse or ODP) with excellent clinical knowledge in Anaesthetic and Recovery to join our team and take a leading role.

Primarily the role will be based in theatres at Wythenshawe Hospital, however there are 5 theatre suites across Wythenshawe, Trafford, Withington & Altrincham (WTWA) with a total of 27 operating theatres across the directorate providing a range of specialist surgery. From time to time there may be the expectation to work across sites.


Main duties of the job

The role of a theatre practitioner is to provide high standards of peri-operative care to patients whilst giving skilled support to surgeons, anaesthetist and the theatre team. Theatre practitioners need a broad knowledge and skill base, including excellent communication, management and teamwork skills as they are involved with the assessment, delivery and evaluation of care ensuring the safety and comfort of patients throughout their perioperative journey.

Surgery

You’ll play an important part of the surgical team by preparing all the necessary equipment for surgery. You will ensure the correct safety checks are carried out prior to the start of the procedure and are responsible for all surgical instruments, equipment, and swabs during the operation. You will become efficient and effective in anticipating the requirements of the surgical team and responding effectively ensuring high standards of clinical outcome and best patient experience. To help and support patients before surgery, preparing a wide range of specialist equipment and drugs, including anaesthetic machines, intravenous equipment and devices that safely secure the patient's airway during anaesthesia.

Recovery

You’ll support and monitor patient on arrival to the recovery area and provide appropriate treatment until they have recovered from the effects of the anaesthesia and/or surgery; assessing and treating the patient until they are discharged to a ward.

Education/Qualifications

* Registered Nurse/Operating Department Practitioner


Experience

* Recent experience of working in a theatre environment.
* Experience in operating theatres
* Evidence of supporting learners in clinical practice
* Demonstrate awareness of clinical governance & audit
* Students can evidence a training placement or spoke within the theatre environment
* Evidence of working in multiple specialties
* Can demonstrate evidence of reflective practice
* Understand the importance of demonstrating and applying professional standards in a high-pressure environment


Knowledge

* Good written and verbal communication skills.
* Ability to organise workload and delegate tasks appropriately.
* Supports and contributes to team approaches and working.
* Problem solving – able to analyse and resolve issues on own initiative.
* Decision making within limitation of role, and demonstrates an awareness of own limits
* Able to demonstrate partnership working with patients/children and families.
* Able to demonstrate ability to negotiate and work our problems with patients/children/families and MDT.
* Knowledge of trust vision & values
* Knowledge of current NHS Key performance Indicators relatable to theatre
* Ability to discuss knowledge of WHO safer surgery standards
