Genetic Counsellor

We are advertising for one full time fixed term band 7 Genetic Counsellors to join our dynamic GC team in Manchester. There will be opportunities to work with the on‑call prenatal team, develop skills in a specialist area of genomics, depending on prior experience in addition to having a cancer genetic case load.

Applicants should be HCPC or GCRAB (or equivalent overseas) registered Genetic Counsellors, applications will be considered from suitable candidates who are due to register with the HCPC or GCRAB within the next 12 months. Overseas applicants will have a certificate for eligibility for registration with the GCRAB.

The Manchester Centre for Genomic Medicine, with a designated Genomic Laboratory Hub, is one of the biggest genetic clinical and laboratory service in the UK, at the forefront of developing education, training, research and clinical services. We have a strong commitment to education and training. The academic arm of the Scientist Training Programme (STP) in Genomic Counselling is coordinated through this department in collaboration with the University of Manchester. The clinical team also collaborate with Manchester Rare Conditions Centre and NW GMSA.

There will be opportunities for CPD through a lively programme of internal seminars and lectures, as well as access to external education and training.


Main duties of the job

You will undertake a range of genetic counsellor duties including: independent genetic counsellor clinics, pre‑natal/urgent referral work, and where appropriate may help contribute to supervision or teaching of other staff members.

You must be motivated and self directed in your learning and must be able to work autonomously and in a team. You will need good multidisciplinary working skills to be able to work effectively with medical colleagues.

You will provide high quality genetic counselling and testing for a wide variety of conditions. You will also participate in our urgency rota to provide genetic counselling in demanding situations (pregnancy, NICU, PICU and urgent cancer referrals).

You will be required to attend and participate in MDT meetings and play an active role in audit.

Person Specification


Education, training and qualifications

* First degree (in genetics, nursing, or biological/social sciences)
* Professional qualification (STP Genomic Counsellor training or MSc genetic counselling, RGN, etc)
* Registered Genetic Counsellor (HCPC or GCRB) or eligible to register within 1 year
* Approved GCRB Sign off Mentor
* Counselling certificate or diploma


Knowledge and experience

* Experience in genetic counselling including managing an individual caseload
* Excellent communication and counselling skills
* Understanding of professional and current issues related to genetics, the NHS, and relevant fields
* Critical thinking skills; knowledge and awareness of ethical practice.
* Works within AGNC code of ethics and GCRB code of conduct
* Able to articulate personal development needs
* Academic experience, teaching and/or research
* Experience of audit and service improvement
* Awareness of local demographics
* Appreciation of 'lay' and public understanding of genetics


Skills and abilities

* Excellent verbal and written communication and listening skills
* Ability to work autonomously and manage an independent caseload
* Ability to work within a multidisciplinary team
* Maintain Registration (GCRB / HCPC or other statutory regulation)
* Excellent organisational skills
* Ability to teach/educate professionals and families
* Able to problem solve and initiate change
* Commitment to professional development
* Ability to analyse research findings to inform practice development
